The ERG Valve thing was talked about a while ago on Outer Limits

Here is a picture. I took of plastick cover to take a photo. Usually it's covered.

The clutch pedal switch is located on the clutch master cylinder and is activated when the clutch pedal is operated. The ECM uses the signal from the clutch pedal switch to provide surge damping during gear change. Surge damping stops engine speed rising dramatically (engine flaring) during gear change. Surge damping assists driveability as follows:
    - Smoother gear change.
    - Greater exhaust gas emission control.
    - Improved fuel consumption.

What I achieved: fuel consumption about the same; it feels a bit punchier at lower revs. Bad quality diesel gives more black (purple-black) smoke when engine under load, for example accelerating up sand hill.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Also - where did you get the blanking plate for the EGR pipe done (or how did you do it). I've seen adverts from the UK advertising blanking kits, but never seen any here in Aust. How much difference did it make?[/b][/quote]
OK, another photo. Red arrow shows steel plate between.

I cut a blank of 1mm steel plate, drilled the bolt holes through and that's it. Yep, it did make a difference to performance a little bit. Like you have just changed air filter. More fresh air entering the engine. As I understand it, EGR reduces the emissions of nitrogen compounds in the exhaust gases by lowering the peak combustion temperatures.

    Cheers,

thanks lou! i know of the QF guy. it depends on what sort of day he having
as to what he will do and charge.
i'll just do it myself at a later date. although he is good for blue slips!

i cant honestly see how doing this mod WOULD NOT make some improvement???? the idea of recycling exhaust gasses into the intake is
    NOT a good idea.

Blocking the ERG valve makes no difference at all, I have tried it! The only benefit would be less crap being put back in to yr oil and that’s a good thing but no performance gain.... If any one is getting there TD5 dynoed PLS do a run with it unplugged and then plug it in and do another run….

I would say this is a not real time improvement mod. Might be investment mod? Clear food and longer life.

RS652 - Great stuff and very interesting. I was contemplating fitting a tank, as I do loads of sand work. Now I can see where to fit it! But the difficult thing is that I am not handy, and that looks like it needs some welding and general handiness.

When you say the ARB compressor cuts out at 90psi top and 60psi bottom, what does this mean? Is it a range of cut of points? i would have though 90psi in the tank would have been a great jelp in cutting down tyre inflation times.

Great job, and thanks for sharing the pictures...

The air pressure switch in my air system cuts off power at 90psi, so i can't get more. If pressure reduces to 60psi and lower air compressor starts working. Went to local ARB shop, they have switches 80-100psi and guys said my should be the same, but it's not. Not a problem, I'm happy with 90 on top at the moment.

Yes, some welding required. My friend does it for me some times. That was about 15 minutes job and one sixpack after all

Why I went with custom made tank because it fits under rear sits. Other way you can use old 9 liters fire extinguisher and fit it under rear arch just on top of exhaust resonator. Not bigger then 9L for ARB compressor. I think 8-9L is critical for ARB compr.

Thanks for all the explanation and pictures Ruslan...

Well, I popped into the QF place today... showed them the piccie of the straight-thru pipe and I can now know what Phil was talking about... I guess working on a Monday after a easter long w/e and in the middle of everyone elses long anzac w/e doesn't agree with those guys (...actually to be honest only one of the guys was a bit difficult, there was another guy there who was more than helpful). 8)

Anyway, they told me if we remove the muffler it'll create more noise and it's actually illegal here in good of NSofW... I'm no muffler expert so that was pretty much it for me

    Cheers

Hey, Scott, it doesn't make more noise, even less. I did several measurements using proper "noise meter" device: outside and inside car in my shed, out/in on backyard (read open air), out/in during driving ~50km/h. Every time it displayed lower level of noise. Average reduction is about 2db. Again it is not a sport exaust style, I still have resonator at the end of exaust system which makes bigger difference in sound. I would say it will be illegal to replace end of exaust pipe with 4", 5",.. appendix like most P-plate drivers do in my area. Even mate who welded this pipe for me was really suprised - NOT LOUDLY.

Come to my place and I give you a demonstration

    Cheers,

    Ruslan

P.S. After installing straight pipe I did some soundprofing: sticky cover under the bonnet and ceiling. Total noise reduction 6db. Now I can listen to the radio and talk to rear passengers on high revs

No worries Ruslan... there is no doubt for me you've got the noise down. After all, you've done it and proven it. The guy in the muffler place kept saying "...yeah we get discos in here all the time..." no matter how many times I said I had a defender. At least the other guy came out and looked underneath for himself. They cack my crack those guys
Thanks for the further info... Scott
