    Transfer gear damage

    Found this damage on the input gear of my LT95 transfer (the output gear from the gearbox.

    No damage on the mating gear.
    I initially thought it must have had something go through it, but now thinking it's just the case hardening breaking down.

    Thoughts??

    I'd say something went through it - but if this were the case I would expect a similar (perhaps lesser) set of damaged teeth on the mating gear.

    I had a broken thrust washer go through the gears on my Series 2 transfer case many years ago, and it looked like that, as far as I remember.

    Case hardening breaking down for my 2-bobs. Especially if the mating gear isn't similarly damaged. Looks like it's done some work, that gear.

    Thanks guys. Doing some research online myself last night, it looks its referred to as a spalling type of failure.

    Yes - I think its fair to say its done a lot of work! The gear came from a 1981 Isuzu Stage1 box. No idea of its history prior to me but its done ~100K km's of fairly hard work in my county behind the turbo'd Isuzu.
    Its done many hours towing with the engine at max EGT and I've regularly seen 100degC temps on a sensor at the back of the transfer case.

    The matching gear was a later one - part of an ex-army tapered roller intermediate shaft set.

    I've got another couple of gears here so will fit one of those.
