I don't think he knows what he's talking about JohhnyD.

See my reply to your original post in the General section.

Also if you update your profile to let us know where you are - someone may be able to direct you to a more helpful Landrover mechanic in your area.

Thanks Mark, but I have now come across quite a few posts re early disco II's, not good news! ('disco engine meltdown in tech forum etc).
I can't afford a 2003 when the problems seemed to have been sorted.

there are some that are not well built, but the majority are. you only hear about the bad ones as a general rule.

    same applies to every brand...

much rather have a 2001 disco than a 3.0 litre nissan of the same vintage thats for sure....

or a turbo diesel yota with IFS...

    perspective is a funny thing.

no matter what brand 4wd you buy ALWAYS get a specialist to inspect before purchase....

Dec 1999 TD5 here.... Worked offroad quite a lot.

265-75-16 tyres, ECU upgrade, Intercooler upgrade.

    Tons of mods, driven hard...

    No problems what so ever...

I think your mechanics very very mistaken!

This vehicle has been a dream to own and use!

    Cheers

Friend in NZ has a 2001 TD5 Disco and had a new engine, 2 x turbos, new gearbox and now has a leaking airbag in the suspension. It is back in the workshop right now due to lack of power. Also heaps of other smaller problems. They bought a lemon and in our experience being around the clubs, their experience is unique to their vehicle.

Has not stopped them from buying LR's though, they have just bought a brand new Defender110 and have 5 other Landrovers in their family (3 Discos, 2 x 110's).

Don't forget Johhny - many people jump on forums like this as quick as they can when something goes wrong..... not too many regularly post how they have been driving around un eventfully... :?

So sure you will find people that have had problems ( Many caused by not servicing and maintaining the vehicle well).... but as Incisor said... every brand and model of vehicles has the odd one that is not good... generally though I still believe your " Landrover mechanic" is wrong.

anyway hope the site helps you.... cause there is more knowledge on Landrovers here than yoiu will find in 99% of workshops - even the specialists..

    Hi Johny
I bought a 99 Disco2 TD5 in august last year,198000ks,now 208000.No major probs at all,and I do push it hard off-road,thats what I bought it for.Very happy sofar, but I may add early model and huge amount of electronics on the vehicle does play on my mind.It is a Landy after all,and Ive had a few Series Landys over the years.
I dont think you have mutch to worry about,Nissans,Tojos,Jeeps and Mitsis all have their own inbuilt hassels.
