Kumho KL41 Ats
Kmart promoted this brand of Kumho a few years back as a good, moderately priced tyre. Anyone been running them? What do you think? Any thoughts on tyres at the budget end - $200.00 and under (and yes I have read the stuff on "you get what you pay for" recommending Coopers and BFG etc.)

I've been running them for about a year. In that time I've done about 8000km, at most 500km off the tarmac. Mine are already showing cuts from going over a nasty rocky stretch of about 2km going into my property.
On the other hand, when I drove the track on the old tyres it ripped chunks off them the size of walnuts.
I reckon you could get them for $150 each with a bit of ringing around. Make sure that's a quote fitted and balanced.
Cheers
Simon

Bridgestone in Perth have a special on for 604vs for $185 fitted (though not including $5.50 to dispose of old tyres). I reckon that is a good enough offer for me and will proceed. Why don't you try your state - it might be Autralia wide
I am not interested in spending too much on tyres this time round as when I get it back from the panel beaters (it is essentially complete just waiting for engine to go back in) I want to be sure that the chassis and everything is just so. If there is any problem in the car after the prangwhich will result in premature wear i don't want it to be expensive tyre.
And $185 is more than I can afford anyway right now.

THE INVISIBLE TYRE
I just bought BFG Longtrail AT for sweetheart $160 each but full retail $195 in 205 x16 size and passenger reinforced not LT.
Read the US sites and mixed reviews. They are OE fit on many US pickups.
But 205x16 size is made in France and not available USA. Seeing Michelin owns BFG, I reckon its a fair bet they are made by Michelin.
To me they are supurb. Quiet , good direction on the highway, assymetric with solid outside shoulder but chunkier inside shoulder and perfect balance with no vibes at all. Passengers commented on how quiet compared to the ATs. Maybe the elusive affordable Michelin MX replacement
I reckon they will be good on sand, dirt , highway but will be BAD on mud.
Don't yet know how they are on dirt or sand or mud but do not anticipate miracles .
I bought 205x16 on the assumption that the size will be available anywhere in the bush seeing standard on Hilux, and in attempt to save fuel.

I have had Kuhmo tyres on a work ute, xf falcon some time ago. They were very impessive. Had some Kuhmo mud tyres on my old Rangie, 31 x 10.5 and they were really scary on a damp/wet road. I notice they have all new patterns now. If you dont know anyone that has them it may be pot luck as to whether they are good or bad.
I currently have a set of Toyo Opats as road tyres, they have been really good. Quiet, good wearing and great grip. Only used them breifly on a muddy track when I took my family to the snow and they were awefull. Ok in the dry though. Best thing was they are only about $180 from Tyrepower.
