Thread: VDO oil pressure sender

Definitely has engine oil operating the sender. Any air in there will be rapidly displaced by the oil pressure, regardless of where it is mounted. The problem may be more to do with a good earth on the sensor. If it is a single terminal sensor, then the earth connection is via the body of the sensor and needs to be good.

No Plumber's tape.

It'll be fine, mounted mine in a similar fashion on my race car. As mentioned just make sure it has a good earth.

Should have a good earth now and planning to make a good earth when i move it. But even vdo recommends mounting sensors away from vibration and heat. Thanks for info. I’ll mount it like i planned and make sure earth is good. I only used loctite before on advice from madman supplier and here.

I've had mine mounted for nearly 3 years now, on a T-piece on a T-piece(yep, two! .. as I also have a oil temp sensor too)
So far no problems with vibes, nor operation ... approx 60+K klms now.
To begin with I used O-rings at the end of the threaded t pieces, and they used to leak after a while.
Then used a very small amount of plumbers tape(gas type) making sure to leave some bare thread to allow earthing.
That also leaked.
Finally went to a plumbing shop and got some thread sealer goop, brand 'LOXEAL' no idea on if it's a specific type or what, just says 'engineering adhesive' and 58.11 and what looks like a W(but could also be a logo).

I've used it on all manner of stuff now, allows earthing, but seals better than anything else I've ever tried(incl loctite).
Last time I used it was on my compressor fittings, all of them, replaced with new bits, and prior when we used plumbers tape on it, it'd always loose pressure over a day.
Now hold 110psi for at least a couple, and more than 60psi for a couple of weeks(out in the weather too!).
Comes in a silver squeeze tube with a white cap.
Needs some effort to come off, so kind'a acts like a thread lock too. When you release the sealed item, the remaining goop is semi hard/semi soft, and crumbles off easily to allow refitment again.
Highly recommended .. and my experience so far with VDO sensors(both pressure and temp) on t-pieces has been fine.

FYI: t-pieces I used are the common aluminium things easily found at various places(speed shops/ebay/etc).

sorry to bring this one back but am doing service finally this weekend and on another discussion people were talking about thread sealant for their diff plugs etc.

Dave (Blknight) mentioned loctite 577 which i happen to have a bottle of. i will use this for diffs etc but my transfer has a temperature sensor for my madman unit. was wondering is this stuff will be ok with earthing sensor issues.

I used normal loctite currently. also on the oil pressure sensor at the engine. I will not attempt to relocate sensor at this stage but want to use something which wont leak and keep a good earth so i dont get the erratic readings i get on my engine pressure as well. would loctite 577 suit those applications too or should i only use it for diff plugs?

I have a recollection that it should be OK for earthing the sensor.
Never used it myself, but did read that it's OK for earthing/sensors .. etc.

I do know that the stuff I got earths fine.

To be sure tho, apply the thread sealer about half way from the end of the male threads on the sensor/adapter, not on the female end.
This way it still seals, but the half that doesn't receive sealant makes a better earth.
I don't think it's important(but what I did anyhow), and the stuff still seals fine just having half the threads 'sealed'.

If you use adapters, or if you fit any NPT type threads(tapered) do a quick fit first, to see how much thread you use on the sensor/adapter to estimate more accurately where to apply the sealant.
The Tdi oil pressure sender threads are straight (10mm I think .. 10x1.5 maybe .. can't remember exactly), but I used NPT sensors on my 1Gauge.
