Thread: Front footwell carpet removal

Don't know what car you've got, but mines a Disco 1.

My heater matrix leaked so I had to get it all dry. My solution didn't involve removing the centre console and was actually quite easy to do.

I removed all plastic under the front seats, remove the plastic rail where the carpet meets the door, remove the plastic cover in the footwell/wall.

Then the carpet can be lifted up. Coolant had soaked into the black rubber matting under the carpet and I found my easiest solution was to cut the rubber out reasonably high up on the transmission tunnel (remember, I didn't remove the console). The I could pull out in one piece the rubber base to allow it to dry (did both passenger and driver side). The carpet stayed in place. The carpet can be easily lifted up and out of the way - I assume the rust holes are on the floor rather than the transmission tunnel, so this should give enough room to weld/repair/repaint with rust kill or whatever.

I repainted the floor with Rust Kill as a preventative - there certainly wasn't much paint on there from the factory...

In my case, I peeled off all the black spongey stuff from the rubber, and when putting back together, I used foam from clark rubber, which moulded itself perfectly.

Sounds like a good plan, it's a series 1 like yours - the carpet did seem to be firmly attached under the console and guessed it would be a huge job ot remove it. Thanks heaps -

Had the same problem years ago in a '95 Disco Tdi. You do need to remove the centre console to remove the carpet, as it is in 1 piece, but it is not hard to do. But if you don't need to for access, why bother :wink:
