Auto gremlin
Hi
My 98tdi autobox (120k) has run perfectly-until the other day. It then decided that it wouldnt go into top(overdrive). It went into 4th (-ie the gear between 3rd and top-if that makes sense) and would not budge-I tried kicking it back to 3rd and revving it up then backing off etc, to no avail. Then after about 20 minutes did it again and it dropped in and has been perfect ever since???
Any ideas? The fluid is about 18000k old so that shouldnt be an issue.
thanks
Lindsay

There's no gear between 3rd & top.
I think you're referring to the lock up clutch that you can feel engage at around 80kph.
I'm not really up on autos but chances are it's a valve block problem that might have cleared itself - maybe a bit of dirt floating around had temporarily blocked/upset an oil gallery or solenoid.

I was going to say 4 speed with overdrive??? That would help the economy.
