Oil cooler gasket?
Hi everyone. Just found a broken stud on the exhaust manifold on my td5. Ripped all that off fine but there’s a lot of oil on the gasket faces and a small puddle on the casting on the photos. Any ideas where that could come from? Also put a phot of the turbo - does it look ok? There isn’t much play on the shaft. Is the recommendation still to machine the webbing out on the exhaust manifold? I’ve got one broken stud to get out and of course it’s the hardest to get too. Anything else I should do while I’m in here?![]()
Oil cooler gasket?
It's a bit hard to tell what is what, but have you looked at the front of the engine at the camshaft plug. It usually goes down the RH side and floods the alternator.
Also it is known for the head to leak between the head and block at the front.
Its really impossible to read anything into the turbo, other to say it looks OK in that there doesn't appear to be witness marks on the housing.
There is a lot of oil in the turbo intake which you appear to have cleaned in the second shot. The oil all over the turbo and in the intake is from the PCV system and the depression valve. A new one may help.
make sure you replace the hidden hose under the turbo. How many Ks has the car done?
To me it looks like the oil is coming from the front of the engine a running back and down, however only you will know for sure.
I have flattened my manifold, cut out the webbing, elongated the holes more towards the ends, and ceramic coated it, and so far so good.
The stud which usually goes is the back one. You should be able to undo the aircon compressor to get at the front one.
Have a look around the oil cooler as it could be that but AFAIK the more common failure is for the heat exchanger inside to corrode when good coolant is not used.

I'm going to leave the webbing and just slot the end stud holes and ceramic coat the manifold.
Which hidden hose do you mean? The small coolant hose joiner? Car has just done 200000. Front of motor is oily as well and it’s oily higher than the exhaust manifold so probably coming from there. Inside the turbo outlets and inter cooler hoses is filthy with oil but I didn’t clean in front of the turbine. Is the pcv the hose on top of the rocker cover?
Which part are you blanking off?
The barb off the oil cooler.
That barb feeds coolant back through the EGR cooler.
My EGR's all gone to god, so it has a reducer and hose back to the expansion tank which isn't needed so both will get capped.
Coolant flow through the oil cooler is back through the block, so blanking that barb eliminates potential leaks, and the last of the EU3 engine cam from the factory like that anyway.
