I’m not familiar with the td5, but on our 300tdi a driver side oil leak was from the vacuum pump.
My Td5 had developed an oil leak which got me puzzled.
I’m 100% sure that it is engine oil because it is fairly dark/black and doesn’t smell like fuel or brake fluid. I can trace the oil to the wiring and pipes near the FPR and above the starter motor from where it drips down onto the gearbox bellhousing on the right hand side. I am at a loss where it actually comes from.
- I am positive that my rocker cover seal is tight as I have just replaced it and also replaced the grommets for the rocker cover. I can not see/feel any oil seeping out anywhere along that seal, especially at the back of the engine head.
- I am also certain that the rear camshaft seal doesn’t leak.
I cleaned these areas multiple times, drove until I had little oil spots underneath the car when parked and tried to trace the source of the leak visually and with my hands. The area above the starter motor is very busy with wiring look and pipes and not very accessible which made it impossible for me to work out where the oil is coming form.
Any ideas?
Cheers Joachim

It has to be one of those, unless you have a leak from the head gasket.- I am positive that my rocker cover seal is tight as I have just replaced it and also replaced the grommets for the rocker cover. it is most likely
1. the FPR or its mount gasket
2. the rear plug for the cam
3. the rocker cover gasket in the back corner
The vac pump is on the same side as the tdi300 but unlike the tdi300 its mounted on the alternator.

No there is no oil around the FPR, but it could be diesel with a bit of dirt added.I guess, I have to inspect the area around the FPR better. I always thought, it would spill diesel rather than oil and discarded it for that reason. Also, I put in a genuine new FPR, gasket and O-ring in about a year ago.
If it is diesel then you would also have to look at the Fuel cooler.(although they mainly leak coolant)
