Its Going ........
Just an update....
To recap my brother just purchased 1987 RR licenced 3.5 V8i, but motor
not running. Motor turns over but won't start.
Previous owner has had it for 4 years, said engine started misfiring put some injector cleaner in fuel ran well for short period then started to misfire again until stopped running at all.
Took it to his local mechanic who said that it has low compression in three cylinders, he wasn't going to try and get it fixed and towed it back home. Said if didn't sell licenced not running would hand in plates and wreck it. We are not sure how long its been sitting idle.
Well..... brother pulled out the spark plugs and the spark plug gaps
were all over the place.
Cleaned and set them, charged battery and low and behold she fired up
at first very roughly with plenty of black sooty smoke everywhere and wouldn't idle.
Exhaust manifold on RHSide was loose, tighened manifold, fired her up again, black sooty smoke and rough idle, fuel probably off...so jerry can
of premium unleaded later and she's starting to settle down, idle not so rough, still fair amount of black smoke, but starting to run smoother the longer she's running.
A run down Roe highway to fill in more fuel in her and she's getting better all the time. A further run to Byford and the motors running well, idle's without help and black sooty smoke has almost disappeared completly.
Best $1,000.00c he has spent
However, you have to wonder how competent someone mechanic' are?
and who changed the plugs?
Cheers
Baggy

Not to surprissing. Some places will say anything if they think you know nothing and will just fork out the cash.
All the better luck for you though.
Years ago my wife had an old mazda with one dodgy spark plug. I knew the thread was stuffed but with care you could still fit a spark plug. While I was away she had it serviced by the local garage. Week after I got back the engine blew up, complete with cylinder through the block and engine bay fire. When we looked over the engine nothing had been done by the garage.

Woodducks and ripoff merchants!
Yep, they're out there. A close acquaintance has a 97 V8 Disco. She took it to a local "expert" to have a miss attended to. She paid $400 ish to get a set of plugs and leads and the advice that it was 95% right and it was as good as it would get.
When we examined the car, a compression test revealed a burnt valve.
We fixed it - now it goes like a train.
But the %4it thing was that the idiot "expert" did not even check compressions! He just took the reddies and sent the unsuspecting lady on her way. Her father paid the "expert" a visit.
Yep, they're out there.... the pr&^%$!!!!
