    Use it or loose it?

Use it or loose it!....it’s often the remark made when, for whatever reason, the subject of Transfer Cases comes up.

Just what are the the issues and problems, inferred in phrase “use it or loose it!

    Maybe "lose" it?

Simply put IF you don't use your transfer case diff lock at least occasionally they are prone to fail when you Really need them.
NOT a big deal really, All you have to do is find a bit of dirt road and engage the transfer case/diff lock about once a month.
IF you cant find any dirt/sand to drive on then you should seriously reconsider WHY you bought a 4WD in the first place

I have a D2 that’s about to turn over 410,000kms. My brother’s D2 is close behind, however it had to complete its last trip on a flat top. Transfer case failure is suspected Use it or loose it?

The LT230 is the most robust part of the driveline, only sidegear washers and in the old days, input shaft splines caused problems.

The linkages get bloody sticky to the point of not moving if you don't use the diff lock or low range though

I ‘rebuilt’ the LT230 on my RRC a few years back - vehicle had around 350,000KM on it - lots of that towing a Caravan around the Country when the In-laws owned it. It’s only ever been in low range a handful of times in all its years and the work I did consisted of new washers on the spider of the CDL, new output bearings and seals and some gaskets - everything else was fine and in very good condition.

On more modern vehicles the mechs can clog up and work as needed is not used for long periods.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

All LT230 transfer cases were not created equal but with a few mods to the right one it will give excellent service

Reading this thread has reminded me that I haven't serviced the transmission on my D2a for about 20'000K's, I'll do it the easy and Safe way and book the old girl into Wyatt's and get the job done Professionally.
    Thanks Guys
