    Engine Air compressor

OK. I scored a Rover Aircon pump today. Hoping to fit it to the engine and install a small tank for the compressed air. Any tips on the best way to go about this?
Also is the aircon pump from the Rover 3500's an Item I shouldn't vandalise or are there heaps about?

Tips.... walker had a great idea... buy a cheap a/c from supercheap auto 80buks or so and junk the motor and keep the tank, sensor and regulator...... very easy way to get everything working very quickly

I have an old monster one here I was going to look at what parts I could salvage. If I need to get to many bits I will look into this idea though.

If you can get a piston type a/c and not the rotary ones (sanden) I have one from an old jaguar 'unica' (i think) and it has a sump where the rotary ones really rely on oil in the system to keep them going over time..... another idea and i guess this only works for v8's is to run the oil return fro the rocker cover into the inlet on the a/c pump to keep it lubed up.... run an oil catcher thou as u might get oil in yr tyres over prolonged use.

    Edd,

This is an excellent thread from the old place:

    http://www.our4wd.com/modules.php?na...ght=compressor

Unfortunately, as the gallery disappeared the photos did also.

Maybe Defender200Tdi could be called upon to refresh them.

    air cond as air compressor

I had one 25 years ago, but used a compressor fom a Sigma I think.
Try to keep the air hose away from the compressor as the air comes out pretty hot. Also, it is a good idea to have a water drain on the air tank, but if its not too humid where u use it this may not be necessary. I ended up using a water filter as the misty mountains around here were putting water in the tyres.
Also, I went thru a few electrical switches due to mud etc, but I wanted control from under the bonnet, so ended up with just a bayonet connection.
Worth the effort as they are fantastic- Oh also might mention I just put a few drops of oil down the intake after using it- still running it though -and the compressor went into 3 different vehicles over 12 years or more. Its a bit sick now though.

for those of you with spark plugs.....

in the old days....a hose was available that had a tyre inflator fitting on one end....
and a spark plug thread on the other.....
you simply removed one spark plug from the engine...screwed in the hose...
and connected the other end to your tyre valve.....
then just start your engine and watch the tyre inflate.....

i guess this method would have been a great way to inflate tyres for the burnout
competitions at summernats.......(you gotta smoke em till they pop.....)

I run a Sanden A/C in mine. Mick is right, they do need to be oiled but you can pick up a small in-line oiler from bunning for about $10. As long as you keep it filled up you are fine.

The reason I like the Sanden is because there are heaps of them around (they were mainly used in the old XD/XE falcon and Fairlane), they have more output than the York, they are smaller and the last one I bought was $35 from the wreckers.
