    Engine Dyno for 300Tdi Sydney

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone in Sydney had put their 300Tdi on an Engine dyno......not chassis dyno.

If anyone had done this I was wondering where.

    Cheers,

    Bill

I’ve never heard of anyone, anywhere doing that.

Putting an engine on a dyno or putting a 300tdi on a dyno? putting an engine on a dyno is pretty common.....

I’d wait till it’s in the car than run up on a dyno

Any reason for doing a dyno prior to fitting

    I wish I could, however....

I should probably provide a little more background. I have a 1964 SWB petrol car that I will be putting a 300TDI into with an r380 and series transfer case. Anyone that thinks it can not be done please save your breath.
I also have already converted my axles to Range Rover ones and have vacuum assisted disc brakes on all four wheels.

The aim of the game is to transfer the engine with evidence that the 300TDI has <20% power increase from the stock series 2.25L (74Hp).

This way I negate the need for any major changes necessary with a engine swap >20% increase of power (collapsible steering column, 2 speed wipers, demisters the list goes on)

There is no point going off the engine HP provided by Land Rover for the 300TDI as is over 20% power increase (111hp).

    Therefore.......

In NSW if you want to be legitimate and get your car engineered you have two options.

1 - Chassis dyno your series to prove its HP and then chassis dyno the 300TDI and de tune it to the required HP. This is fine however you would be starting off on your back foot as the hp figure the series would give would be depressingly low.

2 - Engine dyno your 300tdi and "de-tune" it to spot on 20% power increase. This way you utilise the engine hp figures provided by land rover for the series to your advantage.

I am now about to lock in option 2 unless, I can find someone with a peppy S2A SWB CHASSIS dyno figure that is around the 74HP mark. If I had that I could chassis dyno the 300TDI and de - tune it while the engine is in the car which is much cheaper.

    Cheers,

    B

Bruce Davis would be the only one off the top of my head that would've done it, and therefore have the engine mounts, hoses, etc to bolt up to whoever's dyno he uses
    It'd be worth the call.

Are you running without the turbo?
If so could it be argued that a non turbo 300tdi is essentially the same as a non turbo 200tdi (released in some markets and figures should be available?)

    If not above
How do plan on de-tuning a turbo 300???
For the test you could wire the waste gate open?
Turn the main fuel screw right down?

If you are having trouble finding an engine Dyno start calling some of the bigger marine engineering / rebuilding workshops. If you make up a down and dirty cradle bolted to a pallet I’m sure they would hook it up for you?

Any shop that builds race engines should be able to do it. Have a 'phone around the motor sport type shops and ask. Anybody I knew in that line are now dead or dotty. You might get a shock when they tell you their labour rate.

Easier to put your old engine no. on the 300tdi.
