Zook, it’s a kit for people who normally have absolutely no reason to know anything about their vehicle's wiring but would like to improve their headlight's performance without having to part with an arm and a leg to get someone else to do it for them.

    Cheers

    Thank-you everyone for your input.

I still haven't had a chance to try it again.

Defenderzook, what drivesafe is saying - I had to find out the hard way, I had never had a car with negative switched headlights. When I bought the relays from supercrap, the coil was already earthed to the body of the relay and I had to drill out the rivet and replace it a small nut and bolt and special stepped plastic washers to isolate the connex from earth. (no shorts there - checked again and again)

Interior lights in most cars are also neg switched meaning:

    earth <--- battery ---> globe ---> switch ---> earth
(basically.... + with other stuff between)

I also understand where you are heading Cruiser (and everyone else) ... Simplicity ... I agree and, thats where I started... as this project evolved, wires were added for troubleshooting and in an attempt to remedy the problems. What I've got now is just where I finished before throwing the whole lot into the shed in disgust.

Drivesafe, I'll get back to you on:
............."BTW, I am assuming that your diagram of the headlight socket is as viewed from the wire side and not the terminal side."............
I need to have another look.

I guess I could put it straight onto the disco and it would work perfectly the first time .... but, I'd really like to get it working for the verada first and start again for the disco. Need to remove the washer bottle and battery just to get at the back of the lights in the verada.

    Thanx all for your help
    Stevo

BTW, does the Disco have pos or neg switched lights ???

    does anyone know....
or has anyone heard anything with regards to "why" land rover still hasnt bothered
to do anything with the wiring themselves to improve this age old problem...?

im curious to find out if it is more than just cost cutting.....
there has to be some reason for it.....im sure they know about it by now....
land rover has only been around for............

Hi Zook, I don’t know about new defenders and the like, but new Discos, new Range Rovers and RRS not only have headlight relays but are continually monitored to detect when a globe needs to be replaced.

    Cheers.

    so...are they actually brighter...?
or are they different headlights alltogether...?

(i think some of the newer cars run HID lighting)

i had fitted brighter globes to lurch and melted the switch......
i couldnt believe that the power ran through the switch instead of relays....
    its a 2003 model rover....(possibly using '53 technology?....)
i am yet to re-wire my headlights.....i do plan to get around to it one day....

My RR came with standard 55w H7 globes in the low, high and fog lights and the wife’s D3 has HIDs which are both low and high ( haven’t worked out how it does that yet ) and 55w H7 globes in the high beam driving lights.

    Cheers

I am pretty sure the HID fitted to Discovery 3 are low beam only.

Yep, I was pretty sure that’s how they worked too, but I read something on a pome site and tried my wife's D3 to see what happens.

The low beam flips up when you switch to high beam and flips down again when you switch to low.

As I posted, I haven’t spent the time to workout how it does it yet.

    Cheers.

Drivesafe - That must be the top of the line active headlight jobbie. They look around corners too...
