Drilled a couple of holes in it to allow a little coolant flow over the closed thermostat and tested it yesterday.
I found that when I did that the engine would not get to operating temp in winter.

I then drilled one small hole and fitted a little "dongle" from the old thermostat to let water (and air) through to trigger the thermostat. Some have them some don't.
