I had this problem pop up on several occasions on my D2. It is caused by dust and water solidifying the standard grease in the door latch.

I removed the latch and cleaned in petrol to remove all of the old grease then re applied a small amount of graphite grease to all moving parts. It has never jammed since. (18 months)

The worst thing to do is free it up with WD40 or CRC as they just attract more dirt.

Graphite grease tends not attract all the crap that binds it up

Hopefully, it is just the latch or dust in the area as said before.
Could also be the little metal attachments that connect the latch/handle mechanisms (unlikely though).

Worse case it could be the actuator (little white motor box) inside the door.
This is a royal PITA, and a ***** to get out and get back in (if done yourself).

Does the button move when you lock/unlock it?
Can you hear any noise inside the door, when you lock/unlock it?

Failing rear door locks is a common problem with the D2. If your car is still under warranty then get them to replace it. The lock mechanism actually fails somehow internally. If the child lock is OFF then you should be able to open it by using the internal door handle.

There's also apparently a way involving parking facing down hill and giving the handle a couple of thumps, but I haven't tried it.

I used to crack the handle hard with my palm and that usually would free it up. The dealer cleaned it with what I think was brake cleaner though, but after they replaced it, it wasn't a problem.

I was on the understanding, that the problem also related to some spring for the child safety, and that if it was removed it solved the problem. I never tried to remove it and understand it is illegal anyway.

Ok fixed, the door didnt open from inside or out so i got the trim off and got a spray bottle to spray some soapy water and then blow it clean with the air blower, finally it opened after a few attemps, then took out the mechanism and cleaned and greased it up

works great, hopefuly for a long time

    thanks for the help

As already said, don't use grease. Of any kind for that matter. Graphite powder is the way to go.
Even this stuff would be better.

No, D2 you can't access anything from the outside.

One thing I've noticed on mine (2002 model) is that if the rear door is adjusted in really tightly against the latch, the locking mechanism feels as if it's going to fail - a bit hard to explain...

the service people had pulled the door in really tightly to try and eliminate a gap that was letting in water, then, sometimes you would squeeze the handle and there'd be a click but the door wouldn't open. I found that by easing off the adjustment a tad then it worked better.

Since the lock was replaced it's worked ok, also look at trying to minimise dust - there's some huge gaps around the hinges that can be filled.
