Strange clutch sound in D1.. normal?

    Hi all,
I've only recently purchased my disco so I'm yet to figure out what are the 'normal' sounds and which are the ones that shouldn't be there. At the moment I have this weird sound coming from the clutch area. When changing gears (while accelerating) there is the weird low pitched fluttering and vibration through the pedal after depressing it to change gear. It's not so noticeable when changing up while not accelerating but it's quite audible when doing the opposite.
When changing gears should the clutch feel & sound be smooth and effortless?

(this is in a 93' Tdi Disco)

    any ideas?

Had a look under her today and noticed a fair amount of oil which looks to be coming from the rear main seal. Could this be causing my clutch problem?

Can anyone suggest a place for me to take it to to get checked out? I'm in the western suburbs. Is it likely to be costly?? (i don't like the sound of replacing the rear main seal!)

The rear main seal is in the transfer box and relatively a long way from the clutch so I would think that the two are not connected.

The clutch symptoms I can't comment on specifically.

You will have to do the rear seal otherwise inevitably the transfer case will lose it's oil also the handbrake drum will take in the oil and will slip.

Look at it this way the Disco is 13 years old and these things need attention for longevities sake. "A stitch in time saves nine"

    Good luck

Mahn, I think Benzini's referring to the crankshaft rear main seal. Oil could be getting on the clutch facings & cause a judder like you've described. As for "normal" clutch sounds - there shouldn't be any noise if all is OK. If the rear main is leaking badly, then the clutch will have to come out anyway.

I have a 98 Tdi Benzini and the clutch in mine is fine, doesnt make a sound during up or down shifts and feels smooth when depressed and released. I would follow up on Scouses diagnosis he was a Land Rover Mechanic afterall, he does warranty work now cause he kept breaking nails.

Regardless of clutch condition put a new one in whilst its out, save money later. Matt
