have you worked out what the ticking noise is yet.....?
are you getting the click when changing gears....?
or is it clicking whilst ever the clutch pedal is up.....ie at the same speed as engine rpm......
if it was a constant clicking it would make a very fast ratcheting noise....like the old cardbord
in the pushbike spokes......but a lot faster....
i dont think this is what you are trying to describe.....
if you are only getting one click ...ie when you back off the throttle to change gear and then accelerate
again....its probably in the driveline....it could be a loose tail shaft....a dodgy uni joint (as mentioned) worn axle splines....to name a few....
unless you can feel it through the clutch pedal itself.....

Front End Tick
Thanks for your interest. Yeah I get the click when changing gears. Have done since new. I guess thats the selector gates or related. I am used to that noise and have grown accustomed to it as this car has done 250K now. The ticking I am getting up front is one of those hmmmm "how much is this going to cost" noises, is not tappets timing belt or engine related.
To be precise the sound does not occur at rest in neutral or with the clutch in, at idle or with revs. It does not occur when you are taking off or under heavy acceleration at any speed, in any gear. It does not occur when you are coasting, in or out of gear, with or without clutch. It only occurs just at the point that I round off the accelerator (foot still on but only barely say 10%) after speeding up through gears (yes all of them) and when motoring under light acceleration. As you change up through the gears the noise builds only with speed not with revs. (trust me it is not stones, have had that but this is not the same) Sometimes, and this is beginning to happen more often, just as I back off the accelerator it goes tickety, tickety, tick, tick, tick, etc.. This drives me nuts and is quite loud now. It is definitely a metallic sound. Have had it on a dyno but the whirring of the dyno drowned out the offending sound. By hanging my head out as far as I dare I am sure the noise is up front. Just about to request a full front diff strip down to inspect bearings and splines etc. Once I find it will advise. Any direction will help minimise the diagnosis cost. Until then just think of me motoring tick, tick, tick....

ok...so if you are in gear.......say 4th for arguements sake......
if you back off the throttle then apply it again...do you get the click with the different loads......
or is it there all along...irrespective of drive or overdrive conditions....
is ot worse when making a u-turn.....?

If I'm in fourth on flat ground and place the foot down for full accelerator there is no ticking, as I back off there is no ticking, but just as I approach accelerator off there it goes tick tick tick, or sometimes tickety, tickety, tick tick etc.
I can ride the accelerator at that sweet spot and get the tick to come and go as I please, off accelerator no tick, too much accelerator no tick, just enough to motor along there it goes. Up hill generally no tick as you are under accelerator load, down hill I can get it, along the flat no problem. Bloody noise ruins a beautiful drive.
Have checked whilst driving on the beach when in all modes HR, HR lock + LR and LR Lock and they all get the same result.
Tomorrow I shall go to work via the gravel forest road and engage all modes and confirm the results are the same still.
No there is not clicking noise at any steering lock.

have you tried jacking up one front wheel off the ground and turning the tailshaft by hand to see if you can hear or feel anything in the front diff....?

I've done this without jacking up one wheel. A little cold an wet underfoot tonight to get the jack out, but as of Sunday with all four wheels down my front drive has at least a 1/8 turn of freeplay. The front is still stock setup. The rear has already been converted to Maxi Drive hubs and I think also the axles. This was apparently the best way to overcome the slap apparent since new. As part of this running saga / repair I am contemplating doing the same conversion on the front.

I agree, My brother-in-law and myself once spent 10 hours (5 actual work, 5 at hospital to get finger sewn back together) trying to find a rattle in the front drivers side wheel of a mazda capella, complete strip down of the hub, bearings out etc. The problem...........a small stone caught in the double skin of the wheel trim/cover.
It pays to eliminate the obvious first.
