    UHF installation

I bought a GME TX3200 and a bit concerned about the installation instructions in the manual, refering to how it should be wired up.

It says that there are only 2 ways it can be installed and both refer to the earth either going to the chassis or if to the battery it should be earthed to the chassis, and both via the ignition.

Can just wire it straight to the battery on a D2 seeing as the battery isn't directly earthed to the chassis, or is it.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

I think they are just covering themselves Baz.

Cant see how there would be a problem with wiring straight to the battery, even if it is the second battery both negs should ba at the same potential as the main battery neg should be attached to the chassis somewhere already.

And with regards to wiring through the ignition, it would only be to stop people forgeting to turn it off and flattening their battery.

I wired my Uniden straight to the battery, both pos and neg and it has been like that on the last 3 cars (6yrs now) and no problems.

A ham radio guy told me that you should attach the positive straight to battery (with waterproof fuseholder near the battery ), but negative goes to a point on the body NEAR the battery.

Reason ( I think and deduce ) is that if the thick earth strap from battery to body/chassis gets disconnected or goes high resistance, the only earth path for the battery to chassis is via your thin radio negative wire, radio and antenna ground.

I think chances of that happening are remote though - if you were worried about it fusing both positive and neg wires to the radio would protect it.

I have exact same unit and have put it in my S3 ex mil, then my Rangie P38A and am about to chuck it in Dylan 4, the Disco. All times I have bypassed the ignition completely and earthed to the chassis directly. Due to the wiring, this has been next to the battery for logistic's sake.

If you are installing in a Disco - where are you putting it? I am undecided at the moment.

I would be more worried about the placement of the aerial that comes with it - it's cr*p!

I suppose i could just connect the earth to were all the other things i have there are earthed, like the spotties and the wiring to the Anderson plug for the Arrid battery charger in the camper.

That would be the safest and maintain your radio warranty.

One thing to check when you have it all installed though is that the coax outer has a good earth.

I ran a separate earth because of the powdercoating on the bullbar, it wasn't allowing a good contact to the chassis and/or at the aerial base.

All done and in, i installed it in the roof consol took about an hour, the antenna was already on from the previous radio a Uniden GPS105, great radio but a bit too big and i didn't like the dashpod on the dash, so had no probs redoing the connection to the radio, thanks all.
