    Sooty water on startup

Help Please, can i be pointed in the right direction.
On a cold start 3.9lt 93 RR (196,000kms) spits out a sooty wet spray from the exhaust for about a minute then it goes away.

I am guessing a head gasket but the compressions are all reasonable any ideas would be welcome before i start throwing money at the old girl

    Thanks

    Don't worry be happy.
Unless you have other symptoms , this is entirely normal.
In any case it is extremly rare for a Rover V8 to have water go into cylinders from a busted head gasket as the water passages are only at the front and back of the heads.
So unless its using water don't worry.

    thanks for the quick reply

there doesn't seem to be any coolant being used.
this has only started happening in the last 3 months or so, if no coolant is being used where would the sooty spray come from and why would it just start now

    Thanks

Think of it as a "No Frills Hydro Flush" of your exhaust system.

Tha last 3 months has generally been colder & wetter & is condesation. "They all do it, Sir".

Is it any wonder that Series mufflers contain litres of condensate on cool down & why they rust out so quickly.

Until I fitted a SS box with SS internals, & drilled a tiny hole at the lowest point to make doubly sure, that is.

Guess what? Its winter! Normal behaviour for winter conditions with most cars, although for a much shorter period where there is a catalytic converter which heats the exhaust much more quickly.

It is water that condenses in the cold exhaust - what rots your exhaust if you only do short trips and don't let the exhaust heat up thoroughly.

Not on lpg is it? Common with lpg due to condensation build up in the exhaust from lpg.
