Ben, I had a welsch(sp?) plug leak on my 300Tdi. In this case it was the one in the back of the head. It was just the tiniest pinhole which left a little dribble only when cold, as I reckon the water was evaporating when hot.
When I knocked it out there was one very small bit of corrosion right at the bottom of the plug. The rest of the plug and inside the head were remarkably clean.

I also had a welch plug leak on my 300tdi. Didn't notice it when hot because we saw puddle on the ground and took it for repairs.

But the location wasn't obvious in my case - the welch plug was hidden somewhere and a few things had to come out to replace it. It's quite a large plug - guessing maybe 6cm in diameter. Got old one at home, but I'm at work. Only had a small hole in the middle - and I'd say the hole was made bigger when mechanic removed it too.

The stop leak stuff would be a last resort it tends to damage hoses if left in there.

Sounds silly but is it actually coolant ie green colour, or just water from somewhere else e.g. windscreen washer bottle or lines or water from aircon condenser outlet tubes ?

    Coolant leak

I too own a Tdi disco - and I too have had my share of leaks - since the p-gasket looks OK, but there still is marking on the side of the block near the sump joint, and on the ground overnight, then find an inspection mirror or take the WP pulley off and look at the whole water pump housing front. I've had a front gasket fail at the bottom of the housing, and when I tightened it up ( thinking that it was a bolt that was loose), I created a crack in the housing. The logic is that whilst cold it drips just missing the fanbelt onto the floor, and on startup the fan blows it onto the engine block. When hot the metal expands and no leak. If that is the case, in addition to the normal things it is important to get the seal on the new gasket right. RTV hi temp red /blue, hylomar or whatever you are confident in, and importantly USE DRAIN PLUG. (Its near the water stains you describe). Otherwise there will be some coolant dripping out when you replace the gasket and it may complicate / denigrate the seal.
