    Trouble with 2nd gear in a TD5 110

    Hi,

    My brothers 110 is having trouble selecting 2nd gear. The problem is that you cannot physically select 2nd gear sometimes even when the car is stationary. It seems more pronounced when it is cold. I replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders but that seemed to make no difference!

    Any suggestions?

    I'm not familiar with that box, but is he using the correct viscosity oil?
    On the Discovery, some peple have used SAE 90 instead of the thinner TQF for instance but as that has an oil pump, it's too thick.

    90 in the transfer box & TQF for the R380 gearbox (or whatever is recom. for the 110.)

    How old is it? 2nd gear can be a bit difficult when they are new. Anyhow might be worth an oil change. Mine was getting quite stiff before the 20,000km service but a change of oil fixed it up.

    Have you checked where the pedal connects to the hydraulic bit(under a black metal cover where the pedal comes out of the firewall),the nut on mine had worked loose once and it was hard to find a gear,easy fixed

    It is a 00 110 that has done 95000kms.

    I did just change the gearbox oil and it is the correct viscosity - unfortunately no change.

    When I replaced the master cylinder I adjusted the pedal as per the workshop manual so hopefully its in the right place?!

    ok.....they have a double synchro apparently.....which makes life very hard when changing gears.....

    i got into the habit of double shuffling to get the gears in......




    but try this.......disconnect the connector on the clutch master cylinder.....
    dunno if it will fix your problem......but found i no longer had to double shuffle......
    and lurch went a lot better on gear changes......there was no lag between gears......

    Having trouble with selecting second in early/mid R380's isn't uncommon, this was a problem that was identified by LR and rectified in the later boxes. However if it was still under warranty you would have been able to take the car back and they were replacing the box no Q's asked, and believe it or not they just threw the old ones out! Talking to a dealer after purchising one of these "faulty boxs" he said all that was needed was to replace second gear syncro as they were a faulty batch, and the box would be good, it was just more expensive an exercise to have someone replace the syncro than it was to get the dealer to just replace the box. This problem wasn't confined to just the defenders, it was the disco's as well. However it is a rather indepth exersice and I'll be doing mine when I rebuild it rather than for the hell of it.

    Today I actually replaced the gear oil again with the right stuff. The dealer had advised just to use 75/80 MTF. However after looking on the net the correct oil specified by landrover is Texaco MTF 94. This oil is made just for 380 boxes. Caltex in aust make an oil called Landrover MTF 94 just for the 380. This new oil seems to have solved the problem!!
