Shouldn't make any difference really. EGTs are related to fuelling/air/exhaust restriction, not as much to engine temp itself(but only a little).

That is, you could have higher EGTs from stone cold on a cold day, with coolant temps still on the 50 degree range.

In your OP, you say "ECU upgrade" .. as in mapped? Do you have an EGT gauge? If so, what would be usual temps?

A local here had considered an M57 conversion but found that the engines are excessively expensive in Oz. He hasn't really looked at the problem with his engine, expecting the worst but from his description of the events it may only have a relatively minor fault and quite possibly nothing wrong with the engine itself. He has another vehicle so no urgency in getting the D2 sorted.

Thats an interesting one. There are a few ways you can do it, the earlier ones are pretty down on power and will adapt up to the 4HP22 which is about as cheap as it probably gets... but there is still lots of fluff around the conversion than just that.

The way I'm looking at it, I've found a supplier OS via a BMW engine FB group and his business is basically BMW engine conversions, and has pretty much done all LandRovers, Discos etc. I'm thinking via him, if he can supply stand alone engine looms including security removal and Disco2 integration loom, mounts, LT230 adaptor and spud, hoses and radiators/intercooler although Td5 radiator kit might come across I think, but that way might be as straight forward as possible. I can do the conversion work, but looks like it would be about $7-9k for an X5 30d donor with 6HP26 and probably around $5k for the other bits to do the conversion and exhaust adapting.

Hey Arthur, mate I'm really not sure what the EGT's are, I've never had an EGT gauge on it. The ECU upgrade is as in remapped, well actually it is rechipped being an MSB ECU, it's been like that for maybe 16 years now with an upgraded intercooler done at the same time.

I gather that my local D2 acquaintance might be a little short on mechanical experience and perhaps too easily put off a M57 conversion. Most of the work done on his D2 has been by a workshop near where he previously lived so perhaps the task is a little overwhelming.

I think that'll blow the price right out. Also getting someone who is a mechanic, auto elec, researcher, fabricator and on it goes, especially if they're doing it from scratch and learning on the run, that'd be $20k+.

Update: Finally got to do a pull down tonight.

Engine oil was extremely high.
Removed airbox, it was full of crap... god knows from where considering it has a snorkel.
Removed turbo to intercooler pipe. Not collapsed but did have oil in it.
Removed airbox to turbo pipe, had a little bit of oil in it.
Checked turbo. Oil in it, some play but not excessive, turbine spins without weirdness
Removed tapper cover.
Camshaft lobes and rocker rollers appear normal
Nothing I could see looked cracked in the head
Activate fuel pump, No2 injector leaking diesel.

I can only guess at this stage with the diesel spraying into the sump and raising the oil level that excess oil was spraying via the crankcase ventilation into the inlet and pumping through the motor.

I cant sort the injector from home but I'll drain the intercooler, drop the oil and renew and see if the friendly specialist in Bathurst would like to help out.

Hopefully this is all it is.

the injector leaks not hard to sort.
