Question Wire connection for an EGT Thermocouple - Does it matter if wires are reversed?

    Guys...

I've just had to replace my EGT and was wondering what happens if u get the 2 wires to the Thermocouple around the wrong way? Does it read negative or just a incorrect Temp reading?

Mine seems to reading ok but with one being a digital readout that reads right from zero to whereas my previous one was a analog one that only read once the temp was above 200 degrees.

What's the go by those in the know

Thermocouples generate a DC voltage(millivolts, K type). It will probably depend on the electronics whether or not it will except a reverse polarity. It SHOULD have some form of blocking if likely to damage it, and just not read if the wrong way around.

If it's a thermo-couple and you get the wires around the wrong way, it should read stupid numbers, like going down instead of up, won't do any damage as the amperage's are extremely small.
However it might be an RTD (restive thermal device) in which case it will not matter.

Technically an RTD should have 3 wires, but many only use two. The third wire is a reference wire and is only needed if you are chasing .1 of a degree accuracy.

    Cheers Glen
