    TD5 Defender - cold starting

Now that the temperature has started to drop in the mountains my TD5 Defender often does not like to fire up first go.

Is this normal operation in winter or do my glow plugs need looking at?

Regards Daz (ps so far it always starts second time, in the summer it fires immediatley)

I usually let the plugs go on twice before I turn it over when it's very cold.

It starts much easier. It's a chev though not a TD5.
    Cheers

so are you guys actually cycling the ignition key twice? Am assuming the glow plugs lose energy as soon as the dash light goes out..

If its dropping below zero the fuel might be starting to wax up. Theres a thread in here somewhere about antiwaxing additive, where you're filling up might not add it.

There's a thread in the bio fuels section. You need to use special Alpine diesel in the really cold weather

I never try and start mine until the fuel pump has "switched" to its 2nd cycle, and have no dramas in winter(-5C) even if its been sitting for a week.It just idles higher(took it to the dealer for its first service in winter and asked him if the choke might need adjusting). Dunno why I told you that.

On the TD5 the glow plugs continue to operate after starting, to assist warm up. I don't know what happens in the period between the light going out & hitting the key.

Mine still starts first go. We had -7 this morning according to the radio. All the local dams were frozen over and our block was just a big sheet of ice. Cental locking woul even work. I don't wait for the glow plugs just let the sysem check finnish and start it. I did have to stop 4 times to clear the ice off the windscreen. Only thing not covered i ice after i got to work was the bonnet.
