2015 Range Rover Sport L494 4.4L v8 Rear Boot Rattle

    Hi Everyone,

I am a mechanical workshop based in Malvern, Victoria, Australia.

I have one of my customers' vehicles in with us with a very unique noise that has developed in the rear spare wheel area of the vehicle. We have currently stripped the boot other than the suspension pump, battery and battery bracketry. I have had two technicians in the rear of the vehicle trying to put pressure on the area of concern and nothing we do can stop the noise whilst its actually occurring. I believe the noise is coming from within the cabin as it is extremely loud inside the vehicle and very minor from outside the vehicle when replicating the noise whilst controlled on the hoist.

My gut feeling is a failed spot weld above the rear cross member however I could be wrong. I would like to know if anyone has heard this noise before or has come across this or a similar body noise before?

I have had this vehicle at the ULR dealership, to which they had never heard or experienced the noise. I have raised a technical case with Autologic here in Australia whom raised another tech case to the UK and nobody had heard the noise before.

I am wondering if anyone here has any information with this noise? Here is a link that I have saved to my drop box as I recorded the noise through iPhone Voice Command.

    Many thanks!

Certainly sounds a bit like a sheet metal resonance/rattle.
I know sod all about RRS, but some more info would help:
Where in the car did you measure - the boot?
Is the engine on? - can't tell from the recording.
Was the recording made while driving or stationary?
Does it occur at any particular engine rpm?

Remove the jack, the compressor cover, the side covers and tilt both seats forwards to clear the area more. However the Supercheap advert comes to mind...

Sounds like a loose baffle in muffler maybe? Have you checked exhaust mounts? Does the noise change with revs?

My missus has a 2014 L494 V8 twin turbo diesel, 124,000kms (with third row of seats - electronic seat mechanism is stuffed in the spare tyre well) and we have not encountered this noise.

We have owned since new. We have encoutered lots of other problems, but these are engine related (secondary turbo oil seal gone which in turn stuffed the EGR and DPF)
    .
The only internal rattles that I have come across have been from kids toys finding their way into crevices, under seats or in the door pockets.

Since you've removed most things from the load area and spare tyre well - that's a baffling one (pardon the pun)

Let us know if you have any luck - so if I encounter this ...I 'll know what it is.

    Cheers

Sorry to digress but is the secondary turbo drain single or twin? The twin drain was introduced during the MY14 run so early MY14 still had the single, inadequate drain that could cause oil to be blown past the seals. If your vehicle had the single drain and the twin drain wasn't retro-fitted then the new turbo may again fail.

Has the N375 program to fit the oil sensor extension loom been done yet? If not then there's another turbo risking being replaced.
