My dad uses one when working on his vintage cars, had it for at least 40 years at a guess.
Hello All,
Has anyone come across a "Colortone" spark plug kit for tuning carburettors? I would like to know if they are any good?
I was watching a YouTube clip about a bloke tuning a Solex 32 carburettor. Accessed 2nd December 2020 from Old Rusty, First engine run follow-up with corrections and adjustments - YouTube . The unit is seen at the 10:48 minute mark
"Steve" used a Colortune Spark plug kit. When engine is running the see-through section of the spark plug glows. The mix screws are adjusted until the spark plug glows at a Bunsen burner blue colour. Once this blue is achieved the carburettor is tuned correctly.
Kind regards
Lionel

I have got one and have had it for many years.
it was very useful to tune RV8 carbys.
its easy to see rich as the colour is orange and lean is blue.
Desired is blue with orange flecks.
just like a gas stove.

I remember a ColourTune costing me a bloody fortune about 50 years ago and I used it on every petrol carb car that I had from an Anglia, a Prefect various Land Rovers, Cooper S , Alfa Berlina 1750 and others.. An invaluable tool especially with Weber and SU carbs. I reckon that if I was to venture down to the deepest, darkest recesses of the shed I'd find it in a box somewhere...![]()

Hello All,
Thank you for the replies - much appreciated.
I just found a company video of the Gunson Colortune Accessed 2nd December 2020 from, Easy engine tuning - Colortune by Gunson - YouTube.
Just wondering, Mark F which Land Rover vehicles did you use the colortone on? Do you think the Colortone suitable for using on a:
2.25 litre four cylinder Land Rover motor, a
2.6 litre six cylinder Land Rover motor?
Oh throw in a 202 cc red Holden motor that is fitted into a Land Rover.
All are single carburettor units, Two Strombergs: one on the Holden and one on the 2.6 Land Rover; and whatever came with the 2A petrol motors in 1963 via the Australian Army and previous owners. A Solex?
Apparently, the Gunson Colortone has been around for three decades... I must not get out much, as I had never heard of them before.
Kind regards
Lionel
I don't see why you couldn't use it on all of them but I used it mostly on cars with SU's to get the needle height right. It also helped with the carb balancing on cars with twin SU's. Aparently you could also use it to get the timing spot on too although I never tried that.
I used it with my old S1 and SIIA. I especially used it a LOT on my twin SU RR classic and Rover 3500 S P6 in an effort to reduce their fuel consumption. Boy, could those two DRINK...

use the colour tune on everything that has a carby and accessable plugs.
if its twin carbs, get it running first, get the carbs near enough to balanced then tune the carbs then check the balance. If the carbs are independant (not feeding a single branch manifold) then dont forget you have to tune each bank of cylinders.

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
I have 3 that were purchased in the UK years back (Triumph Trident, taking one out when hot and moving to the next cylinder burnt your fingers).
Useful for setting up the mixture at tickover and balancing the carbs if there is more than one.
Gunsons made a number of Automotive tuning tools like a carb balancer, vacuum gauge etc.
I used to deal with Gunsons Sortex who made high speed sorting machines, same company different division. This would have been in the 80's.

Yep! got one in drawer somewhere
Used on Cooper S (proper one) and Classic RR 3.5 with Solex and then big SUs on stroked 4.2. Also found good for re-jetting fixed jet carbies and for setting float levels. (What are float levels? I hear.
)
Might also be good for setting up basic idle mixture map on an after market ecu.?????
Good gadget! :0)
Cheers

We had the colortune for sale in our spare parts shop in the late seventies. I was very suprised to see Repco had a promotion pn them a year or two ago.
The colortune was very good for getting the mixtures right and especially for multiple carbys.
