    Tdi gearbox advice Please.

Well haven't got disco yet but my brother has a question. His Disco Tdi 98 has a problem, when he put the centre diff lock in, it pops out when under load what would cause this and how do we fix it or does it always happen?

And my question is do auto Tdi's have centre diff locks, and if I put a rear airlocker in it should you still use the centre diff lock?

The CDL will tend to pop out if it hasn't been used for a while...

The best technique is to engage it whilst moving (front wheels straight ahead)...below 5 kph...because the gears don't mesh sometimes...no synchro mesh and square cut gears. Tell your brother to try practising this on a loose surface.

The more you use it the easier it gets.

You can usually tell because the little stick doesn't go in positively so also try reversing and re-engaging before you head down that steep hill.

Have found the advice when using low range to drive forward a couple of metres then push it again has stopped this happening on mine. Sometimes if you dont it pops out of low range

Most likely it has simply not gone in properly when engaged - even if the light is on - most discos don't get offroad so it is not used much so on many cars has little wear and is tight. Engage the difflock - move the car a little and reengage and it should be right.

If it is not this - then I am sure some else will enlighten you. With the center diff lock locked the disco is basically the same as a series landrover or a early to toyota with part time 4wd with hubs locked and in 4wd - so a rear diff lock is an unrelated piece of kit - as has been said, in 4wd conditions the center diff lock should be locked irrespective of whether you lock the rear diff or not.
