    OIL POOLING ???

Hi folks ? i've come across the term "oil pooling " a few times . would someone be kind enough to explain ?? i use a td5 as my daily , so have cleaned the intake a few times :-)) i'm guessing its excess oil in intake manifold . murphy's law says it will collect in one spot more than others. what problems does it cause ? any info much appreciated. pete .

It's hard to know without the context but usually it refers to pooling in the bottom of the intercooler.

The oil comes from the engine ventilation pipe into the inlet manifold before the turbo.

It is quite normal but reduces the efficiency of the intercooler so lots of us fit catch cans /separators to to catch the oil before it gets to the intercooler.

LR recommends removing the intercooler for cleaning at 130KK and I guess more frequently after that. It is a PITA job.
Its pretty unlikely for oil to pool in the inlet manifold, but if you still have an EGR, you can get a lot of carbon mess in it, which requires you to clean it up, by transferring most of the mess to your clothes.

a leak from the turbocharger oil return line will often find its way around the back of the motor.

when the engine is cool, just feel under the turbocharger around the return line, you will know straight away .

if its wet , ie oily , there is a 48c convoluted washer responsible....also check that nut is tight . its simplest of tasks to change and its caught a lot of people out.

when mine leaked the washer had done the boogaloo, I think its spring steel.

What tends to catch more people out is overtightening the 2x 8mm head bolts on said turbo oil return line , warping the flange . 9 times out of 10 a new gasket wont fix it , the return line needs to come off and filed flat.

Don't listen to those who say oil pooling is just car pooling for Land Rovers
