Question BFG's A/T, have they changed in the last 5 years !

Up for some new tyres for the disco and I'm thinking I'll get the same ones I had before, BFG's A/T 225/75/R16

Now the new tyres where put on the disco when I brought it in Nov 2001, they have done 90,000 km's and probably haved a bit more in them for the on road stuff but off road they are hopeless !!

The main reason I am thinking of going these tyres again is because I still have one brand new tyre sitting on the back of the disco, that has never been used before !! and plus I need the extra petrol money

My main question is there any reason why I wouldn't use this tyre ? i.e has the design change in the last 5 years, etc ????

    Matt.

I think they went to the ko spec. Im not sure what the differences are though as they still look the same.

Matt there are the old AT and about 2002 the new KO tyre replaced it. If the tyre on your spare is a KO it will be ok to use with 3 new, but bear in mind that most tyre manufacturers have a 5 year warranty only. Check with the tyre dealer if your not sure about which AT you have.

The KO had changes made to improve the tyre such as rim flange protector and differant compounding. There were a lot of complaints about the new KO after release re low KLMS. Not sure how they go now. Maybe forum members have some fitted and can shead some light on this.

more than likely will just get 4 new and keep the old one as the spare, so long as it works just as good when needed, i should be fine I guess. just really don't want to buy 5 if don't have too.

most people I talk to get between 80-110,000km out of the KO's yet we have just clocked 70,000km and they may just sneak to a legal 80,000km on the Patrol. They are actually wearing identically to the Cooper ST's that were fitted previously. Bear in mind that the road conditions these tyres cop are far worse than a city based 4x4 will see, gravel/dirt every day, substandard bitumen roads that are narrow with badly broken edges that you need to drive over to miss oncoming traffic/trucks as the road is only 1.5 lanes wide, etc. Typical country roads that are tyre killers compared to most. SWMBO drives the Patrol 95% of the time and is also much kinder to her tyres than I am.
BTW, haven't had a single puncture (yet )

Same here, never had a puncture on the current tyres, that's why the spare has never made it off the wheel carrier !!

Just rang BFGoodrich (aka. MICHELIN Australia) and spoke to one of the guys there and he said that the one's I have should be KO's so went and checked and bingo, there KO's (never noticed the KO before) I also told him that it has been sitting on the wheel carrier under a cover since new and he said it should be fine, they normally suggest keeping them for 6 years.

So looks like I only need 4.

    Thanks guys, shopping time now...
    Matt.

    Update :
Cheapest I found after 3 calls was $235 each (inc. fitting/balance) anyone else had anywhere cheaper ?

    BFG's

Matbor. I've got a new/unused BFG KO 225 x 75 x 16 which has been in my shed for a couple of years you can have for 1 hundred bucks plus delivery.
Don't know how much that delivery would be but should still make the tyre a good buy.
It's never been on the road and has "rested' in my shed for too long.

I had a set of 245/75 BFG all-terrain when the KO pattern about 2001. I had them fior about 2 1/2 years of on-road oand hard off-road driving. Dry conditions they were great, mud they hated and would block up turning them into slicks

My only problem I had with them is that bloody rim protector if you drop the pressure off-road and you go through mud, there's a suseptability of crud lodging in between the bead and the rim, causing it to leak. I had this happen to 3 tyres on the one day, one went flat but the other 2 sealed up after we washed the rim out with some water. Mate had the same issue with his, same senario but only the one leaked.

Dunno if anyone else has had this problem, would be interested to hear it

I got about 55,000 hard kms out of mine and they still had about 6mm tread when I replaced them with Goodyear MT/R's on Aquarangie

I've had the same problem as Aquarangie. Twice on my BFG AT's and once on my BFG MT. I've let my tryes down to about 25 psi to go through mud, two developed slow leaks and the other tyre come off the rim. Mud was getting between the trye and the rim, never had this problem with the old style BFG without the bead protectors. I'll be thinking twice about BFG's in the future
