    Testing suspected contaminated petrol

I have had a fuel pump die about 10km after refueling from near empty. Might be just coincidence- it is the Jag after all- but with a dealer price of just over a grand (waiting for a better price from the UK) I think it's worth investigating if the fuel is the culprit. Premium 98-octane from BP at $1.62 per litre no less.

The usual internet searching has come up dry so I'm wondering if anyone can advise on where / how to get the fuel tested?

Any fuel depot will have a paste that they put onto the dip stick for the tanks, from memory it will turn blue or purple if water is detected. If that helps any.

The consumer affairs page says 'Have the fuel independently tested'. That was where I got to last night before posting this query.

I did manage to find one mob in South Melbourne who may be a source for this, being the weekend now makes it difficult. Asking the supplier for a test is not something I'm keen to do- kind of the opposite of independent.

It puts me in a bind, as I can just replace the dead fuel pump and hope the fuel is ok, but if the fuel is the cause then I'm several hundred dollars out of pocket and back to square one with less chance of having a successful claim as I will have interfered with things- and likely to need replacement of everything from the transfer pump in the tank (it's a 'saddle' tank with a complex transfer and pressure arrangement) through to the injectors and pressure sensors. Or I can go through the hassle of getting a fuel sample tested, just to be told it's fine and I'll have wasted time and money doing that.
Going to contact the servo manager today, might be able to get a sense of whether there are any other reports of problems.
