    overheating while towing

    gday all,i have a 95 3.9v8 discovery that is overheating while towing my boat.while driving without the boat the temp is fine but after 20mins of towing the temp comes up to just below the red(havent let it get into red).i recently had the clutch fan replaced as well as overflow bottle(split on seam),mechanic put in a new thermostat yesterday but it is still overheating(took it for a test drive today to see if new thermostat fixed it).it is losing a bit of coolant but i cant spot any leaks.there is no water in the oil.i searched the forums and gained a bit of info-overflow cap,blocked radiator,water pump or head gasket.im not the most mechanicly minded person in the world so any thoughts on why it overheats only while towing would be great.

    It is working harder when towing. My head gasket (Td5) went recently but the only symptom was overheating while towing the camper trailer above 90kmh on a hot day. All other times it behaved normally.

    How good is your radiator? It may be worth getting it rodded to clear out some of the rust and crap that gathers in there.

    How old is your radiator. Chances are you need to remove it and have it rodded. I had the same problem as you, getting warm particularly when towing.
    I had it rodded and the dude that did it said the cores were 80% blocked now the temp dosn't go over half way. Cost me $75 doing the remove install myself.

    It may be a head gasket. It may be a partially blocked radiator. If the radiator has never been cleaned or replaced, I'd suggest having it checked first of all. The radiator in '95 P38A was 2/3rds - 3/4 blocked. It ended up costing me an engine.

    You cannot afford to have a Rover V8 overheat.

    its auto isnt it....?

    have you ever had the auto serviced....?
    is the auto oil in good condition....?

    if the auto is straining more than it needs to it will overheat and put more heat in the cooling system as well.....
    as it uses the radiator to cool itself.......


    if servicing the radiator doesnt fix it.....the auto is another place to look.....
    this is assuming the timing is set correctly.....(as mentioned above.....)
