No Brake Fluid to Passenger Rear While Pressure Bleeding

    Hello All,

When I bought my 1996 300TDI Discovery 1 off the previous owner its brakes were not working.

Today I fitted a new TRW brake master cylinder. I filled up the new reservoir and then hooked up my brake pressure bleeder to the master cylinder. When I cracked the furthest bleed nipple = passenger rear, there was no stream of brake fluid. I took the bleed nipple all the way out and got up and checked the pressure bottle. Its pressure reading had not dropped.

I then checked and loosened off each of the other bleed nipples one by one and the same story occurred. No streams of brake fluid coming out of the bleed nipple or around their threads.

I then loosened the two brake lines that hook directly up to the master cylinder. Once loosened off there was plenty of brake fluid streaming out.

Is there a check-valve or something in line between the master cylinder and the wheel brake callipers that could be stopping the brake fluid in the pipes somewhere?

I have used the same pressure bleeder with my Series vehicles with wheel cylinders and once the bleed screw is loosened the brake fluid pours out. Something must be amiss with the Discovery's system!

Any ideas how to get the brakes bled properly?

    Kind regards
    Lionel

I have had problems with brake flexi hoses being blocked internally. You may also have a kinked metal pipe. Keep working back towards the master until you get flow and then the position of the obstruction should be locatable.

I had a similar issue with my '94 but only on the rear circuit. Front's bled fine but nothing to the rear. It turned out to be a dud proportioning valve, so that might be worth checking/replacing.

Remember you can bleed at any screwed connection by just slackening it.

    Hello All,

Thank you for the responses, they are greatly appreciated.

Another complicating factor is that the 1996 Discovery 1 is fitted with ABS. According to some youTube clips like this one; accessed 30th July 2021 Bleeding an ABS system on a Land Rover Defender / Discovery 2 - YouTube I need to access the ABS modulator via a scan tool.

Bugger! I should have stuck with Series Land Rovers - no computers or software required with their brakes.

I am also now researching how to bleed an ABS system without a scan program.

    Any suggestions?

    Kind regards
    Lionel
