Guys, got a 4lt V8 Thor in my Disco and some ticking lifters. How simple is it to change them? Do the heads have to come off etc?

You need to remove the inlet manifold, valley gasket, rocker covers, rockers and push rods. You will also need to drain the coolant system to a level below the inlet manifold, and god help you if you drop anything into the engine.
Not hard, but time comsuming and you need to be careful when re-gasketing stuff. New gaskets and sealant required for the valley. Read up on the shop manual first.

Are you sure it's lifters? It could also be the rockers, as they can have a fault (apparently) in the Thor engine, so I'd be checking that too.

thanks guys. The noise seems to be coming lower than the rockers so I can only assume it's the lifters. I will double check thou!

If your replacing the lifters, you really should change the cam as well as it will also be worn. Depending on how many Ks the truck has done the timing chain and sprockets whilst your there as over time this also will stretch. Not a hard job, just take your time.

It's only got 50k on it and just had the heads de-coked as it appears the valve stem seals were shot from day one. It was pinging when i bought it with 30k on it. I am hoping it is just simply the lifters given the amount of k's and previous issue.

yeh they have only become noisy (sounds like just one) since getting it back from the "head job". They reckon they checked the cam for wear and all was OK, it may just be bull **** they spun me but he seems a trustworthy guy.

I know this sounds stupid, but have you checked that the exhast manifolds are nipped up properly, I remember my old 3.9 made a strange tick which turned out to be the damn nuts on the manifold comming loose.

I also have a D2, low kays with what sounds like valve train noise. I have been trying to evaluate before I go ripping into the engine, and have tried a fix in a bottle by way of lifter conditioner. This stuff worked a treat in an old HQ 253 I owned, but no dice with the D2. First time I tried it I drove down the M4 abt 20km, and was then idling the car for extended periods during the day, hearing it tapping away quite noticably when standing outside the car, then back on the M4 home. With it warmed up, I gave the car a bootfull on the M4 a few times, got home and the engine the quietest it's been. Now I notice it's quiet when the engine is cold, sometimes is quiet when given a decent run, then sometimes I get home after a drive and it's tapping away again. My feeling is that it's lifters rather than rockers, and as I don't know what grade oil is in the thing, I'll next try to change it to something not too thin or thick like GTX2 maybe. Otherwise I'll have to open it up to see what's going on. Has anyone else experienced what I have here and can perhaps shed light on this odd behavior?
