Defender Bloody noise - Final Update
Well guys
Have got the car back from Graeme Coopers and the issue and cause of the massive front end noise which thankfully is now gone is as follows:
1. Despite previous owner assuring me the diff oil had regularly been changed it had not.
2. The oil in front diff had plenty of water in it which had damaged both the pinion gear front and rear bearings and also the diff carrier bearings.
3.Diff centre was removed and all said bearings replaced.
4. Apparently the damage to the pinion bearing caused the pinion gear to float on trailing throttle and then make horrible pinion to crown gear noise.
That is one battle fought. Unfortunatley the car now has a high frequency vibration in driveline after the diff works so back the anti christ goes next week for another round. I can only guess that something has not been installed correctly, also have gear whine that I did not have before.
Am very surprised that Coopers didnt just shove a new crown wheel and pinion gear in while the diff was out, not sure how expensive those gears are but I'm sure would not have added too much to the $1600 job??
I have maxi drive diffs front and rear just FYI.
Any feedback more than welcome.

if it needed a new crown wheel and pinion....im sure they would have done it....
it sounds like you caught the problem before it damaged the gears....
they know their land rovers down there.....
and do you really need to spend more than that....?
just drive it around over the weekend and let things bed themselves in and settle....
the noises may go away by monday......
feedback.....?
have you checked the other diff...?
i would go through and check/change all the oils so you know what and when....
and check also the diff breathers.....so you dont get water in there again.....

Good to hear you got it fixed.
If GC did make any mistakes during installation they will freely admit it and fix the problem.

Hey Zook
Dont know how the water got in there - must have been through the pinion seal as the car has a full wading kit in it.
Have already hit the rear diff oil, gearbox oil, xfr case oil, clutch and brake fluid - just had not done front yet cause of the diff guard being a pain in the ass.
Was going to drive up the central coast today and just thought I would check the wheel bearings on front of car that were adjusted last week when in the shop and the right hand front wheel again has at least 5mm of vertical movement - this is the second time this has happened - I reckon I must have a bad thread on stub axle and the lock nut pops back a thread or two - cant see how the preload could back off otherwise with all the lock nuts and tabs that are used - off we went in the wifes car - I think my wife thinks I have bought the biggest lemon ever - $$chi-ching$$

with tapered wheel bearings....a loose bearing will last longer than one done up tight....
and even with the lock tabs and lock nuts......the whole lot can turn 1/8th of a turn....
every time the lock tabs are removed....they need to be discarded and new ones fitted to prevent this.....
you will never get them flat enough to do their job once they have been used.....
and yes....lots of people reuse them with the result you mention above....
myself included.....(not by choice though).....
and dont forget the swivel hubs.....you didnt mention them in your list....

Zook the swivel hubs were serviced last week as a part of the diff job - dropped the car off this morning at Graeme's and there is between 5-10mm of play in the wheel now, now way an 1/8 of an inch play could do this. Ward mentioned something about a bearing possibly not being pressed enough on stub axle?? Not sure, as you have said the guys there are very professional - just another on of those things I guess.
Am taking the opportunity to have both my driveshafts balanced.
Trying to smooth out this truck as much as I can.
Am just about to spend $250 on some gearbox oil that Ward has recommeded (Neo race oil) - he reckons its the ducks guts and will make the old R380 change and run much smoother. Also thinking of some new tyres - what do you run Zook? I dont do much mud driving so am thinking of getting rid of these Nankang Mudstars (which are wearing rapidly) and going for something a little less aggressive????

im still running general grabbers......
im on my second set....got 80,000kms from the first set using only four tyres....
i never rotate the spare in for some reason.....
and if i rotated my tyres more often i would have got another 20,000kms easy from them.....
and i dont pussyfoot the thing around either.....i even have the TC light come on while cornering if im "in a hurry".....
the grabbers are what they come with from the factory.....
if you are thinking of getting some serious rubber.....instead of 235 85 16....
go for 255 85 16.....its supposed to be the correct size for the defenders....
i think they come in BFG....and one other brand........
there are a few people running bfg muddies and are quite happy with their perfomance
on and off road....and one day i will probably do the same.....when dollars permit...
