How to get more hp out a tdi 300

How much money do you want to spend?

I heard that putting the turbo & intercooler from the 2.8HS motor in a 200Tdi made a tremendous change. It would probably do the same for the 300Tdi. Try contacting someone who imports the 2.8HS as a replacement motor for Land Rovers and see if they can get you a turbo & intercooler. Anthony from British 4Wdrives (03 9729 9943) imports them and has one fitted to a 200Tdi Lightweight.

Other options would be the LPG / Diesel conversion. I sent the company a query a couple of weeks ago and have yet to hear back from them.

Having only owned a 300Tdi for a week, I'm only begining to learn.

Well, Ian from Thermoguard has, I have, and a stack of others on here and OS have tweaked the pump.

Bear in mind I also have a 3" exhaust.

Gains. The ba$tard actually accelerates from idle now, revs like all buggery and pulls up hills better than our TD42T Patrol.
Downside. Uses a bit more fuel, (up @ 0.5l/100km) blows a big puff of smoke at wide throttle openings/very low revs.

I'm just waiting for my new EGT and I will be following Ians guide ASAP.

When we stayed at the caravan park in Hay last week i got talking to the guy who owned the place and he had a classic rangie with a 300Tdi in it and he had a guy in melbourne tweek the pump (which i assume is the same as the one everyone is talking about) and the power out put increase he reckoned was awsome he gave me a copy of a dyno print out and the power increased considerably.

At 100km/hr power increased from 32kw and 197Nm (at the wheels) to 57kw and 347Nm (at the wheels). He reckoned it was a totally different car to drive. Matt

Yes I did it to my brothers Tdi. And what a difference you can't feel the turbo come in anymore the power curve is very consistent he even dragged off a mates L/C which has had $6500 spent on the engine to make it go faster. Negatives there aren't any, no noticeable extra fuel consumption. Just more power down low. Highly recommended will be doing it to mine when I get one maybe this Saturday.

If this is the case why didn't the factory engineers do this before sale, wouldn't it be in the companys best interest to sell a more powerful motor?
Well seen as I have 2 x 300TDi's I will tweak one and use the other as a control to compare.

Dirty Dawg - The engineers in the factory have to design an engine which will run on a wide variety of fuels (quality wise) while complying with various noise and emission requirements. They also want to be able to guarantee some sort of extended engine life. They also have to deal with the variable end results which mass production gives. Therefore they give a fair leeway between safe operation and optimum output.

i had mine tweeked in brisbane just before i went across the simpson desert last year

i had an increased in power down low but also had a big smoke trail following me every time i put the foot down, which is every sand dune, going up hills etc. i was suprised that i averaged 11.6L/100 over 6800km fully loaded even though i was leaving a smoke trail behind me. the defender was much better drive esp taking off in 1st gear and going up long hills

when i got back i returned the car to the workshop and they quite happily detuned her a bit so that i didn't have as much black smoke but i also lost a bit of power

i'm currently returning 10.5-11L/100 empty, i have not been on an extended trip fully loaded since the detune, i'm guessing it will be about the same.

i'm saving for an egt guage before i start adjusting the fuel pump using thermoguard's instructions. the biggest risk you will have is increasing the egt's by too much
