Disco 300Tdi Low Range Gearing ?

Has anyone else found there is an annoying gap between low first and low second on a Tdi disco ? ( manual)

On a moderately steep downhill in first low is stopped or almost, but go up to second low and it runs away a bit too much.

This is with 245/75 tyres but standard size doesn't make much difference.

Is my technique way wrong ?

Technically you should never change gears on a down hill whilst 4wding that is
on the Army 4wd course (6weeks long across the blue mountains) the instructors would belt you with something if you changed gears on a down hill
As for gearing I believe the Disco is not as Low range as the Defender maybe you should see about a Defender transfer case gears.
If I'm wrong no doubt one of the wiser ones here will correct me.
Graeme Cooper sells a R/C transfer gears for real low range.

You can change downhill but to do so you have to feather the brake, take up the braking force and then change up. If you find that you start locking up when touching the brakes, the slope is too steep for 2nd & just leave in 1st.

The ideal change would be one that your passengers wouldn't notice...

The other thing you could try is to give it a bit of throttle.

    That's good to know.

It bit more the difference between first and second gears I mean. In other makes I have driven ratio matching seems different. On the Disco it seems you almost need another gear ratio to select in between L1 and L2. ( no not on the fly - before you go )

Only gap between L1 and L2 i've noticed is neutral, seems to be ok down and uphill if it's to steep for 2nd then 1st is usuallay great remmember if it's steep and rough you don't want to go to fast anyway.
