    Transfer case shifter rattle

    '95 Discovery 300 Tdi
The transfer case shifter rattles like mad till the motor is doing 3000rpm then stops, is this a common fault and is there an easy fix?

if you have a lot of vibration coming through....check the engine and gearbox mounts arent broken.....

its ok for the lever to vibrate with the engine.....but it shouldnt rattle......
its just a solid lump on top of a steel rod......unless you have loose linkages.....

My son-inlaw got under the car while I held the revs at approx 2700 revs when the vibration was at its worst and he said the noise was coming from the bellhousing and he noticed the bolts were loose so we tightened them and the noise dissappeared. I'd been putting up with it for 12 months cause no-one new what it was and it was that simple.
    Cheers.

    Hi DesertBug
Chances are the theads will be worn having been loose for so long and will become loose again fairly quickly.I would think about getting loctite onto them to hold them tite.

Thanks Andrew, good point, will check it out again shortly. As you can imagine there's plenty of oil around the bellhousing also, from the rear main, which is a common thing I'm told, so will have to wash all that oil away before using Loctite.
    Cheers, Ian.
