Thread: Replacement radio antenna

I also broke the aerial on my Disco 1 - I replaced it with a powered universal one from Repco - cost about $50 - you need to take out the inner plastic guard in the wheel arch to gain access - if you break the plastic inner guard fittings universal ones from supercrap work fine.

The aerial works great automatically off the radio - didn't go up with the CD - it had the capacity to put in a manual switch if required.

The standard hole in the mudguard was a little small but some gentle filing made it the right size - not much was needed.

Was looking at the electric ones but as I had to chop away what looked like most of the guard and fitting the flares theres a huge gap between the plastic inner lining and the guard, so I figured that the electric aerial would be subject to too much water and mud without the inner liner protecting it.

So a spring loaded aerial seems to be the answer.

Sorry - don't understand why the inner guard needs to be removed permanently - the inner guard goes back in where it came from after the aerial is fitted - my disco had original equipment flares and there was no gap - the electric aerial even used the same mounting bracket as the original fixed aerial - I never had a problem with water and mud. The only issue I had with the fitting was to make the hole in the guard slightly larger.

Gazzz - I would have a guess that the flares fitted are aftermarket to allow for larger than standard rims and tyres, hence the guards have been trimmed as well.
