    Defender TD5 won't Start??????

Hi all, sorry for not posting for a while, I am in a new relationship so I have been a little busy lately he he.
My 11-01 Defender refuses to start and I don't know what to do about it. *The electric fuel pump is working ie noise at the tank when you turn the key.
    * The glow plugs come on and then go out like they should, if you try to back to back glow it the light doesn't come on so I assume that they are working correctly and are already hot that's why you cannot do it again straight away.
    * A few weeks ago it refused to start and I just tried to start it over and over till it did, no luck now though.
    * I usually starts without glowing it anyway.
    * I rang my local dealer 3hrs away and they don't have anyone close by that they use to help me?
    * The dealer didn't suggest anything other than bring it in- yeah right, as if I can do that from here.
    * It winds over but won't kick or even try to start.
    * It has done about 118,000km. No probs lately at all was running fine. Everything was normal.

I hope someone could suggest what I can check first or ANY suggestions at all as I don't have a car anymore and its my only vechicle. My girlfriend just left this morning and she took her car!!!!!!!! Shelfish or what he he, she only lives 630km away and needs it to drive to work everyday. Long distance relationships ie lots of time on the phone.

Hopeing someone can HELP me I don't know where to start. I knew this rover would someday cause me problems as we have no dealer here but I didn't think it would start this soon.

    Thanks all
    Cheers Scott

I am not the expert here but I would be looking at the fuel filter. Have you been changing the filter regularly? You might have picked up some dirty fuel.

I would remove the filter and drain it to see if any rubbish would come out and the take it from there.

    Cheers.

Scott - have you, just for the sake of it, tried to reset the safety inertia switch on the firewall? You may have thumped it inadvertantly. Press the top of the switch down to reset and try it all again.

Just another silly question - you haven't run out of juice have you? You suggest that it started a few weeks ago and now it doesn't You might also have air in the fuel lines. Follow this procedure to see if it helps:

    1. Shut off
    2. Wait 15 seconds
    3. Turn key to position 2 (contact)
    4. Wait 30 seconds
    5. Shut off for 5 seconds
Repeat this 4-5 times so the air gets purged out

Thankyou both for the replys, I haven't changed the fuel filter since purchasing the truck, but only use on farm fuel which is pre filtered at my tank. I will check the safety switch first, dumb question, where is it exactly, is it mentioned in the manual? I will also try purgeing the fuel lines as well, and then if that doesn't work, check the fuel filter.
    Thankyou again for the replies.

It's smack in the centre of the firewall Scott.

Thanks, I will now go and see what I can do with it. Have to put another battery in first as the old one is now flat from trying to start it yesterday.

another option for you... how old is the 'farm fuel'?
    it could be off...
Deisel doesn't last forever and does grow some nasty stuff in it

    http://sierrachem.com.au/html/fuel_fix.html

especially if you have some water in the tank (quite common) no comment on the dubious claims made on the website - personally I'd drain out the water at the bottom of the tank, not expect it to be absorbed into the fuel

I do work in a fuel analysis lab - in Singapore and have seen some shocking results of deisel, kero, avgas etc when stored for 6 months (or longer).

filter and or injectors could be blocked if you have this kind of problem...

    THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU
its now running and I restarted it 5 times no problems. I did both ie reset and purged the air. I don't know what was the problem but its fixed now. It never ran out of fuel though, and I had been using it every day.

Just a question there seems to be a lot about the wiring looms going wrong, I will do a search on it but i was wondering is it something I should be concerned about and if so is there anything I can do to prevent me having to replace the looms.

    Thanks agains
    Scott
The truck has been going very well so far and I am averinging about 450-500 km per tank till the light comes on mostly highway kms. I assume this is ok, I do drive it fairly fast ie 110 mostly. It does seem to use a lot more if I push it faster again.

Good to hear that you're on your way mate.

Looms? There are a couple of problems with them on a Td5 - the main one being oil in the injector harness, being propagated via a capilliary action throughout the harness. It tends to make your engine stutter at low revs - particularly in low range. Is this a problem you have? Otherwise - it just sounds like you had air in the lines.

Also - I notice that you're from Inverell. It's getting as cold there as it does in Cooma overnight. Are you running alpine diesel at this time of year? You may have just waited long enough this morning for the fuel in the line's temp to rise to above freezing - and go back to liquid form from the gelled state it gets into when very cold. Try pouring a few litres of kerosene into your tank and run it through for a while.

    Cheers
    Chris

Scott - I know you've got it going again, but I just wanted to add to Omaroo's comment on the freezing.

I have had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago when we had heaps of frosty below zero mornings. Same symptoms - just wouldn't start. Did the purging trick and eventually got it to start and since then it has been absolutely fine (no further sub zero mornings).

Hope it keeps going! Not nice to wince every morning when you turn the key, wondering whether the car is going to start.

    Cheers
    David
