    Tdi - worsening fuel consumption

My auto 98 Tdi seems to be getting thirstier. A year ago i would get around 750-900 kms to a tank. These days if i get around 650kms I'm doing really well.

The car has 175,000kms on the clock. I have done all the simple things like change air and fuel filter recently and it gets regular oil changes every 5,000 km's. The timing belt was replaced about 10,000 kms ago. I haven't increased tyre sizes or added more weight in this time.

I notice when i stop driving i can smell diesel when i get out but have never been able to actually find a leak, and given that it would seem to be at least 10 litres per tank down it should be a pretty obvious leak!!! I've just put the diesel smell down to being normal - is it?

What other things could be causing this increase in fuel consumption? Thinking maybe the injectors need a clean?

Those things have a habit of cracking the lift pump hose connection. (top one on the diapragm housing). Check that out next (with the engine running).

Lift pump diaphragm get's a hole in it, if you primed the fuel lines when you replaced the fuel filter you probably also did the lift pump diaphragm.

That seems to be just about the most common problem.

I had a seal go in the fuel injection pump, about $30 for the replacement, though I never did it so I don't know what is involved in replacing it.

Lift pump is easy to refit, just awkward.

    Cheers

Checked around lift pump - all dry. I didn't need to prime the fuel lines after changing the filter, it fired straight up.

the return lines would be my next port of call.

remove the rubber welcome mat on top of the engine :P and inspect the return lines with it running... one of mine had a very fine crack, which i didnt find until the one beside devoloped a bloody big one and i then went thru and inspected them all. i now carry 2 short lengths of hose in my small parts tin in the center console in case it happens again.

I second Incs fuel return lines.
Been smelling diesel for the last week or so and not been able to find it. Two lines were pi$$ing diesel out at idle.
Second time I've had to replace them in 3-4 years.

Oh yeah, the fuel economy had gone to pot over the last tank as well.

Maybe the injectors need removing and cleaning (ultrasonic) or possiblly replacing. Poor atomization from the injector nozzle may give poor economy.
