Has anyone fitted the Zenith timing gear kit to there 300 motor??.
Have been told the difference is amazing! economy extra power etc,
Evidently that motor was designed to have gears?. But they used that stupid rubber band instead!

I do note that my local LR servicer is offering them for install so maybe they have improved since 2002.

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole....as there really is no need if you look after your Timing belt...it's a "risk/benefit" thing

The timing belt works fine these days, just a shame it took so long for L/R to fix a major engineering faux pas.
Mine's a Jan 1997 build 300Tdi Disco and it had the timing belt done at 76,000kms by a mechanic in Wollongong (not LR dealer).
It's now got 123,000kms. I don't know what the old belt looked like when it was taken off - and the mechanic didn't tell me anything strange was going on.
I have read about the various kits that were released, is there a way to know what your car has got and if it requires it?

See page 2 Paragraph 13 for the various fix it kits.
Regardless of this the torque setting on the pulley is critical and LR lowered the setting to stop the belt wandering.

Thanks for that. I have read that article (about 2 years ago) but didn't remember the table listing the kits/VIN number chart bit.
One interesting thing to note was that it says "According to the Land Rover Workshop Manual, this belt must be replaced every 72,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first. If it should fail it will cause serious engine damage. The wiser amongst you will know however, that it pays to replace the belt a little sooner at 60,000 miles."
72,000 miles is about 115,000kms and 60,000 miles is just under 100,000kms. My log book says to replace the camshaft drive belt (this is the timing belt isn't it?) at 60,000kms.
I have a '99 maintenance sheet for the 300Tdi which also says 72,000miles for the camshaft (timing) belt, although this should be reduced to being replaced every 36,00 miles/60,000km under 'arduous driving conditions'. These include "driving in dusty and/or sandy conditions", "driving in extremely hot conditions", driving on rough and/or muddy roads and/or wading", "towing a trailer or driving in mountainous conditions"
Sounds like it covers most normal Oz conditions, eh
I've gone 100,000km before replacing it and the belt looked fine, but I wouldn't recommend it.
