We'll need to know the total vehicles sales as well so we can figure out a percentile rating

Going back a few years, It was a figure like 90% tdis to 10% V8s. I'm not sure whether that was worldwide, or just the UK home market. Suspect the latter.

I've been working at a LR dealership for 15 years now so I can give my view of petrol/diesel sales.

In the early '90s, petrol Discos would outnumber the 200Tdi's by about 3:1 (ie 75% petrol, 25% diesel). The figure is probably higher as the first Disco wasn't sold here with a diesel, but I'm going on when the petrols & diesels were sold side by side.

The diesels started catching up once the 300Tdi was released & a big plus was the auto becoming available. This mean't a lot more diesel Discos becoming "city" cars. I would say towards the end of the Series I Disco that petrol/diesel sales were close to 1:1 (50% P, 50% D).

The Series II Disco with the Td5 completely changed the picture. Whereas the 300Tdi was a bit of a slug with the auto, the Td5 was like a rocket ship in comparism. Sales of diesel Series II Discos went way past petrol engined versions. I wouldn't say it was out of the ordinary to get a new V8 Disco through here but I'd say a good 75-80% were Td5 autos.

The D3 carries on the trend. Over 2/3 of the cars through now would be the TDV6 auto. The base petrol V6 has a decent price advantage over the diesel so that's taking some sales away.

With the other LR diesels, it's a different story.

The Freelander diesel was a very nice car (L series diesel). IMHO, it was a nicer car to drive than the 4 cyl K series but both cars were only available in manual transmission. I guess most people getting a small 4WD wouldn't even consider a diesel as the economy benefits are less than with the larger cars. As a result, around 80% of Freelanders sold were the petrol version.
The new Td4 improved the diesel sales a fair bit but still over 2/3 of Freelanders sold would have been petrol (V6 by this time).

The New Range Rover of 2003 has the very nice BMW diesel. Very smooth & quite powerful for the heavy RR. Most of the buyers of these are at the top end of the market where fuel costs are an issue though. Consequently, the majority of cars sold are petrols.

These are just my views. Other dealers in other areas would get a different picture.

Mine is diesel, but i think Scouses input asnwers it all.

You would have to say it is simply fuel prices driving Diesel sales at the moment, thats why i bought a diesel disco, and thats why people are flooding the market with S/H V8 discos and you dont see many TDi's.

If fuel prices dropped to 50c/L (diesel would drop accordingly aswell) tomorrow how many people on here with Tdi's would consider buying a V8, or is it more than just economy that made you buy a diesel? Matt

Well that blows the theory of small demand for diesel parts out of the window. I think as stated previously in the other thread that the high pressures associated with diesel engines demands higher quality parts thus greater expense and the demand for parts and expertise plus the constant technological advances in diesel technologies (therefore constant training) creates the higher prices we see at the service and parts departments.

Well in the UK about 95% of land rovers cars (across the whole range) sold are diesel.
won't be long before aus is the same. It was creeping towards there when i was working at southside land rover
