Yes it definitely has an intercooler (air only) It is easy enough to take out by itself, unbolt the retaining plate off the radiator and intercooler, hoses off intercooler and radiator, side fixings and out they come!
The intercooler can come out without removing the radiator so probably the other way too. When I did my timing belt (300tdi) I'm sure I didn't have to remove the intercooler only the radiator.
Hope this is of some help. Did you investigate simply a 'power flush' of the radiator and block, sometimes this is more than adequate if there is no holes.

Found your overheating problem OUTLAW tis all the mud in the fins of the radiator, about 10litre bucket worth, I may have to mount the radiator on the roof rite along side the mud exit :eek: door.

I believe tdi was first coined by VW and stood for Turbo Direct Injection.

AFAIK that is what Rover intends as well. The 200Tdi was the first direct injection engine from Rover. It followed the 2.5TD.

I always thought it meant turbocharged diesel intercooled. FYI most heavy truck diesel engines use a water cooled heat exchanger to cool the charge air, Cummins, Detroit etc. Some refer to aftercooler, some to intercooler.
