Seat box retaining screws, SIII Lightweight - it’s driving me “nuts”!

    Hi All,
Along the outer ends of the seat box on Series/Defender LRs are a row of (four?) bolts/screws that attach the side of the seat box to the floor/sills.
On my Lightweight, along the front of the seat box are the “speed screw” type floor screws and their captive retainers.
Along the side of the seat box are similar mushroom-head slotted screws, but with a fine thread captive nut in a similar retainer to the floor screws along the sills. The captive nut looks like mrc2178, the door hinge nut and retainer from a SIII/Defender.
However, parts diagrams for SIII show the seat box retained by what looks like 1/4UNF bolts and nuts.

Questions! As I want to replace the screws and obtain a number of retainers for mine.

What is the part number for the fine thread mushroom head screws in the same place as the hex head ones pictured online on SIII seat boxes?

Am I right that the captive nuts are mrc2178?

Are mrc2178 original imperial fittings (sick of ending up with metric stuff that can’t interchange! And likely has Phillips head screws etc!). I suspect they are metric as are allegedly common to Disco etc…

Thanks for any assistance. This may be a “Lightweight” mutation thing - as I think the reason the mushroom head screws are used there, are as the door seal rubs on them. Hex heads would damage the seals.

    Cheers,

    Dave

I can't really help, as I have no experience with lightweights, but I would point out that the other factor you need to take into account is "in service" modifications. I know that on my 2a I have replaced the hex head + captive nuts along the front of the floor panel with the same dome headed speed screws as are used on the inner and back edges.

Also, it is a reasonable bet that the "fine thread" screws are 1/4"UNF, the same as the hex head ones.

If you have an example, it may pay to take it to a good fastener supplier and see what they can offer.

I made appropriate bolts for mine from coach bolts, Threaded the shank & cut a slot in the top with a hacksaw.

    Thanks people.
Yep, they are 1/4 UNF x 1”, slotted mushroom head machine screws.
They aren’t a modification - they are there as the door seal wipes onto them, unlike I believe a standard SIII which has the hex heads which don’t (?) pass under the door seal. Lightweights are 6” narrower than a SIII so this shows up in weird ways! (Don’t snap a half shaft…).
Any pointers to those screws online in Australia appreciated! I’ve looked at the usual suspects like classic fasteners etc…
Out of interest the captive nut is a “J type cage nut”. At £8 each I’m cleaning mine up!

You can get the screws you're after from Paddocks, just had some delivered recently.
    Bolt - Paddock Spares

The spire nut for the floor screws are also cheap from Paddocks (45 cents), cheaper still if you buy a box of 100 !
Spire nut to use with 320045 - Paddock Spares

They've recently added a hardware & fixings category, odd to see Metric bolts in there but a few gems, all in blue bags though.

Yes, freight adds to the cost.....
I tend to bulk order and the savings are still there.

With the Paddocks site don't rely on searching each category. If you have the part number search using that and sometimes they have, or can get, the part you're after.

Just found that bolts also available here Land Rover Parts - SCREW - 1/4 UNF X 3/4 (floor screws & alternative to dash binnacle screws on SIII)
