    R380 cross drilled gear thingamybob

    Hi all,

I'm going to look at a manual 95 V8 Disco this week and want to know how to check this part.
I've searched and read about it but pictures are missing.
So If anyone has pics of the area I need to remove the cover from and also pics of what it should and shouldn't look like then I would appreciate it if you post them.

    Thanks.

This was a good thread but pics not up.

The pics show the cross drilled input gear and the output shaft, which the gear runs on.

The cover to remove to access these, is the round cover at the rear end of the transfer case (up and to the left of the handbrake drum.

The input gear can be removed through this cover. Rotate the intermediate gear to a position where the teeth of both intermediate gears are inline with the input gear.

    Thanks guys.
Since I don't have a transfer case in front of me I don't suppose you know what tools I need to remove the cover?
Phillips head screw driver or 10mm socket etc?

It sucks being on site at work during the week when you want to be at home looking for 4wds

FWIW - Using a proper oil in the gearbox is more important than the crossdrilled gear. MTF94 is the stuff you want....

Camel Landy - It doesn't matter what is in the gearbox if what you are looking for is wear in the transfer case... . The crossdrilled gear is the Transfer Case input gear. The internal splines can wear on that gear and the splines on the gearbox output shaft wear as well. Both are lubricated by the oil in the T/C.

Bugger... Yep, I was thinking about the wrong bits... But I can't for the life of me remember what now.

But don't just think you're going to slide under & whip it out though.

From underneath, the PTO plate is in a bugger of a pozzie & if it hasn't been off previously, is a hell of a thing to get off as the setscrews were fitted with a Loctite, or similar compound, & there ain't much room up there to easily use a spanner. I am told you can go through the top (haven't tried that one) but you will need to part dismantle the gear tunnel.

It will have to be a very understanding owner that will allow you to go through this performance.

Mine wasn't crook but as a precaution I bought a Steve Parker Oil Feed Plate from the UK.

    Good luck.
