What filtering you need in your fuel line depends largely on where you get your fuel. If, like most of us, you get ALL your fuel out of bowsers, and don't get muddy water in the fuel filler, a single filter is adequate.
If you live in a cold, wet, climate (such as the UK) and ever leave the vehicle in the cold for overnight or longer with the tank less than full to allow condensation, you NEED a sedimenter to separate out the water. One extra filter can fill this function, but more than one similar filter in series simply means that you never have to change the second filter, because anything it can trap will be trapped by the first one. When the first one fills up it is blocked, not letting dirt through, unless it is damaged, which is very rare.

Patrol filters get very mucky, particularly if using farm fuel, speaking from experience !
They also have an OE float on the base of the filter to warn about water, IIRC as do 'cruisers. Not a bad idea.
TD42T Patrols also have a tiny gauze thimble filter buried in the injector pump about 1" below a fuel line banjo fitting that has to be fished out with a piece of welding wire. This little tacker has stopped many a Patrol dead in it's tracks as most owners and quite a few mechanics are unaware of it's existence, so another filter before the pump isn't a bad idea.

The sedimentor in a Landy definately catches a lot of nasties before they get to the main filter.

Know what your saying in regards to that little inline sucker, my hitachi excavator had two of them, It stopped one day, found the one in the banjo at the water trap was blocked ,cleaned it out still no go. one day later found the other one in the inlet line at the lift pump, right down underneath , had to make my middle two fingers nine inches long to get to the sod!!.

I've got into the habit of undoing the bolt that holds the sedimeter together, dropping it off and wiping out the bowl completely. I'm amazed at what is in the bowl every time I do it, nothing but sludge.

Good idea to be carefull where you drop it, like not in the middle of the lawn unless you like dead grass, half a litre of diesel spills out.

So its an easy job to clean it out ? Do you need to buy new gaskets or anything?

I can not find a sedimeter I think they must be something found on later fenders (mine is a 94). As they sound like a good idea - are they something you can add on or can you add a second filter like the patrol owner?
