Thread: Sticky valves

if you are mechanicaly minded you can pull the heads off yourself and save a heap of dollars.....

they are not that hard to do if you have the book or rave cd to help you.....
this should guide you through step by step......

shouldnt take you any more than an hour to an hour and a half to get them off....
(if you do it often enough you can have them off in 20mins....)
you will need a torque wrench to torque down the head bolts on reassembly.....
the rest of the tools are just standard sockets and spanners....

Couple of other things to look at...

1 - Try a fuel additive to clear some of the crud build up on the valves. l've used the 'Forte' stuff over here in the UK with some good results. Couple of tins into a full-ish tank, go for a long run, rev the nuts out of it & watch the **** come out the back!!! (but I dunno if you can get it there though...)

2 - Check the injector connectors! On my truck, it showed the symtoms of a sticky valve where actually it was just a dodgy connection on the injector??!!

I've had a problem with my 96 V8 Disco for about 2 years where the valves stick when the vehicle is under heavy load. Actually, almost any load nowadays. I read some advice in this thread about removing the heads. Can the heads be overhauled by someone who is mechanically minded (but with no experience) or is that a job for a pro?

There is nothing hi tech in a rover V8 head but if they need a valve grind or new vlave guides you wont be able to do that at home. You can easily remove them and check them out before taking to a head specialist to save on the labour cost, i have lapped the valves and done a mild port on my 3.5 rangie heads to good effect.
