If you line it with carpet , isn't that then the headliner?
Any thoughts out there on running without a headliner?
I removed mine some time ago, to redo it and fit sound deadener ect,
Thing is - I really dont want to put it back in. The old Disco is so much better without it. More open, more big, less claustrophobic.
I'll be lining the roof with carpet so it still looks half decent.
Just dont want dramas with annual Road Worthies etc. I'm assuming I could get it passed with an engineers cert?
Couldn't find any info in the ADR's but there's around 20,000 sections I still haven't scrolled through.

I hope so, there a few bits of high density foam behind the original liner, whether these are to just give the original some support and shape? If they're for head impact protection, I'll be screwed.
I'll be seeing an engineer in the next few months, for other stuff, they'll know.
Just getting itchy feet on the setup, would love to remove the old head liner brackets, but that's pretty much irreversible.
What sort of carpet are you going to use?
Marine carpet is easy to clean and fit
Most coppers wouldn't know what a headliner in a D2 is supposed to look like and as long as it is a neat fit (not sagging) I can't see any illegality with swapping out the old liner for a carpet option
Sounds like a great idea as many D1 and D2's have the obligitory sagging headliner problem.

I'd remove the liner then scrape off the old fabric and foam then paint with fibreglass resin so you end up with a hard shell.
Then paint or recover.

Hi mate, by liner i mean the whole thing, I'm doing a mini camper conversion.
Taken out the middle seats and fitted a single third row seat from a 7 seater (still to be engineer approved)
Was hoping to fit a large parcel shelf from gutter rail to gutter rail behind the front seats, and a front overhead console as well.
The extra room without the liner is crazy, ditto for the rear side plastics.
NVH is through the bloody roofstill, If I can go a naked / stripped out interior i'll be happy.
My upholstery skills are sorely lacking, was thinking of getting something that can fit / mould to the contours without too much cutting.
I did an old S3 roof years ago with self adhesive carpet squares from bunnings, didn't meke any difference to the sound level
I think you're right about the coppers not knowing or caring, but I've got to get the old bus engineered, they'll spot it for sure.
I'm moving interstate within the fortnight, to a Land Rover desert - will be hard to source a headliner once there and shipping one up to fnq will be impossible.
I'd rather not fit a headliner now, just so it can pass engineering for the seat change only to rip it out later anyway.
