    300TDi EGTs

    Hey folks,

Quick question; does higher EGTs than normal and a little loss of power on hills mean my injector pump that has done over 400k is worn out?
    Boost pressure is fine,
The only other thing i though maybe the cause is maybe oil build-up in the intercooler?

    Thanks!

No one else experienced higher than normal EGTs and found the cause to the a worn out injector pump?

    I haven't.
I have no idea on the history of my tdi, before I got it, just a lot of guesswork.
It towed something a bit heavy in that a previous owner to the chap I got it from had a brake controller fitted(I removed).

I got mine at 320K and now has 440K, so I have no idea how many of the klms my tdi has done encompass original mechanicals.
I know the head has been done at the least, it was quite obvious when I checked the car out. It had small leaks here and there from the usual suspect areas ... etc.

When I first got my tdi, I fitted a EGT(gauge cluster) and found it was running a bit high compared to what many recommend to keep it too.
I also thought that the turbo sounded a bit wheezy(no whistle/whine) and not knowing the history of it, I thought to change the exhaust out to be sure.
Exhaust bloke fitted a more open centre box, and a 'hot dog' type rear resonator in place of the rear silencer .. and immediately turbo whilst got a bit louder(not too loud tho) .. where it could at least be heard.
EGTs dropped a fair whack straight away.
Where on a long hill climb I'd see near on 700°, now it was more like 550-ish .. but still no power to make this long climb at highway speeds.
Most loaded trucks struggle up at about 60-ish(or slower) and my tdi would slow to 80k/h at about the 3/4 point of the climb, then cycle between locked and unlocked 4th for the next couple of minutes. It was annoying, trying to hold a proper say 81k/h for it to stay locked in 4th.

With the more free flowing exhaust tho, no problem. It'd hold at about 90 locked no worries. BUT! the rear resonator droned way too much for my taste, so I stupidly installed a more muffler type rear box!
Arrgghhh! now back to the original issue of a slight lack of power and the locked/unlocked torque converter issues back up this highway climb.
I tweaked the fuelling to try to get a good balance between power and EGT, but it's not easy.

I reckon the turbo is a bit down on efficiency or something .. but definitely the exhaust made the most difference so far in trying to find a good balance.
On level roads, I think I see something like 400-ish depending on ambient temps .. so not unhappy with that tho.
I did clean out the intercooler a few years ago, had a heap of oil ... about 50-100ml .. didn't measure it, just a rough guess ... cleaned out till clear cleaner came out ... made zero difference to EGT or power.

I fitted an electronic boost controller to mine too(early on) and have set it to boost at about 18-20psi on the gauge, and I regularly get about 18psi if on this highway climb when unlocked or holding third up the climb.

Other thing of note with EGT and a 'lack of power' is roof rack. I have a flat aluminium roof rack. It sometimes gets fitted and I'm too lazy to remove it after use. In terms of roof racks, it's not too unaerodynamic, being flat... but it takes a heap of power at highway speeds all the same. Marked difference when fitted, or not, especially up this highway climb too.

IIRC you have an manual, whereas I run an auto .. so your situation will be a bit different when relating comparisons here too.

But these are the things I've noticed that make a difference to how the tdi runs when power is needed. Other than tweaking the fuel pin to get a balance between power and reliability(ie. egt) I haven't needed to touch the IP.
